Book Description
This book draws upon Vygotsky’s idea of perezhivanie, emotions and imagination, and introduces the concepts of subjective sense and subjective configuration. These concepts are crucial for explaining and understanding children’s development from a cultural-historical perspective. A book which theorises the relations between the social and the individual through a study of a child’s perezhivanie, which analyses emotions more holistically, and advances the concepts of subjective sense and subjective configuration, is much needed. This book examines the complexity of human development through a comprehensive elaboration of these concepts, allowing for new insights to be put forward. It doesn’t always follow the chronological order of Vygotsky’s publications, as many of his works remained in the family archives until the 1980s, when his Selected Works were first published in Russian. There has long been a need for a contemporary book on the scholarly treatment of perezhevanie, emotions, and subjectivity, and as such this book revisits dominant representations of these concepts and then puts forward new ways of conceptualising and using them in empirical research. The chapters cover a broad range of case studies where the concepts of perezhivanie, emotions and imagination and subjective sense and subjective configuration are used to give new empirical and theoretical insights into the study of human development.

Book Description
The ability to learn concepts lies at the very core of human cognition, enabling us to efficiently classify, organize, identify, and store complex information. In view of the basic role that concepts play in our everyday physical and mental lives, the fields of cognitive science and psychology face three long standing challenges: discovering the laws that govern concept learning and categorization behavior in organisms, showing how they inform other areas of cognitive research, and describing them with the mathematical systematicity and precision found in the physical sciences. In light of these theoretical and methodological shortcomings, this volume will introduce a set of general mathematical principles for predicting and explaining conceptual behavior. The author’s theory is based on seven fundamental constructs of universal science: invariance, complexity, information, similarity, dissimilarity, pattern, and representation. These constructs are joined by a novel mathematical framework that does not depend on probability theory, and derives key results from conceptual behavior research with other key areas of cognitive research such as pattern perception, similarity assessment, and contextual choice. The result is a unique and systematic unifying foundation for cognitive science in the tradition of classical physics.

Book Description
Flawed Innocence presents the nine components needed for a person of the Christian faith to begin to understand what religious people call divine providence. In particular, being a Roman Catholic, the perspective uses as a base the tenets of the Catholic faith. The nine components are set in the framework of an arc. I call this the "Arc of Existence." Divine Providence is what the faithful refer to as the will of God.Each component is presented as a chapter of the book. Each chapter presents information dealing with the premise. Each chapter has an editorial section where common concerns are discussed. Also, there will be a section entitled "Crisis Corner" where important information is discussed pertinent to contemporary times. The book begins with the fundamentals of the Catholic Church needed to comprehend the nine components that will follow. After the introduction the text begins with the beginning of the universe and God's transcendent presence. Of course, the use of scripture, sacred tradition, the Magisterium and the real world experiences of prominent people are instrumental in the accomplishment of our task. The "Human Condition" is discussed in terms of man's fallen nature. It is stressed that because of original sin, humans are suspect in their efforts to lead people to their proper end. "Reasons/Faith/Revelation" is the chapter concerning the ability of man (women) to digest to some degree the immensity of God. The chapter of "Culture and Society" discusses the fundamental elements common to all societies past and present.Chapter 5 begins the exploration of God in relationship to the importance of the universe and the earth in the plan of God. There is a profile of Jesus being both human and divine. His mother Mary plays a prominent role in all of Catholic teachings. In chapter 7 the Catholic Church is discussed as the instrument God has used to further His will in a real world where Satan exists. It is Satan and his followers that must be overcome before human existence becomes the holy perspective that God demands. Finally, in the last chapter there is a view of eternity, from the "Particular Judgment" to the end times. This is when human existence reaches the pinnacle of possibility which the faithful refer to as heaven.

Book Description
In part one, Carl Unger outlines and unlocks one of Rudolf Steiner's most essential works, Theosophy: An Introduction to the Spiritual Processes in Human Life and in the Cosmos (CW 9). As a close personal student of Rudolf Steiner and a member of his esoteric school, Carl Unger gained deep understanding of Steiner's most profound works, especially Theosophy. For those who want to "crack" this book and are willing to work, Carl Unger's commentary will prove enlightening and help the reader penetrate beyond an intellectual understanding of Steiner's seminal work. In part two, the author guides the reader through the essential principles that underlay anthroposophic Spiritual Science. In his foreword to its earlier publication, Alan Howard wrote, "This little volume, though not the only work from Unger's hand, is the essence of what he did in this field. It is not everybody's book, nor, even for those who decide to take it up, an easy book. Each sentence builds closely on all that precede it; each is essential to all that follow. For those students, however, who seek a secure foundation in pure thought for the suprasensory realities of which Steiner speaks, and are willing to give it the study it deserves, this book will be a continuing reward and delight."

Book Description
In recent years, political philosophers have debated whether human rights are a special class of moral rights we all possess simply by virtue of our common humanity and which are universal in time and space, or whether they are essentially modern political constructs defined by the role they play in an international legal-political practice that regulates the relationship between the governments of sovereign states and their citizens. This edited volume sets out to further this debate and move it ahead by rethinking some of its fundamental premises and applying it to new and challenging domains, such as socio-economic rights, indigenous rights, the rights of immigrants and the human rights responsibilities of corporations. Beyond the philosophy of human rights, the book has a broader relevance by contributing to key themes in the methodology of political philosophy and addressing urgent issues in contemporary global policy making.

Book Description
Whereas standard approaches to risk and vulnerability presuppose a strict separation between humans and their world, this book develops an existential-phenomenological approach according to which we are always already beings-at-risk. Moreover, it is argued that in our struggle against vulnerability, we create new vulnerabilities and thereby transform ourselves as much as we transform the world. Responding to the discussion about human enhancement and information technologies, the book then shows that this dynamic-relational approach has important implications for the evaluation of new technologies and their risks. It calls for a normative anthropology of vulnerability that does not ask which objective risks are acceptable, how we can become invulnerable, or which technologies threaten human nature, but which vulnerability transformations we want. To the extent that we can steer the growth of new technologies at all, this tragic and sometimes comic project should therefore be guided by what we want to become.
