Book Description
These Proceedings of a NATO-ARW (HTECH ARW 96 00 52) held at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy from Aug 5 till Aug 9, 1996 resulted from many discussions between various workers, concerning the need for a gathering of all (if possible) who were concerned about the subject of superconductivity fluctuations in High critical Temperature Superconductors (HTS). It appeared to many that the Skocpol-Tinkham work of 1975 had to be revitalized in view of the discovery of the new superconducting ceramics and the enormous amount of work having already taken place. The study of HTS is one of the most prominent research subject in solid state sciences. The understanding of the role of fluctuations is also thought to be necessary before technological applications since the fluctuations may destroy the superconducting state. The workshop discussions have touched upon (i) Superconducting fluctuations in the vicinity of the critical transition, (ii) Superconductivity fluctuations near the percolation transition, and (iii) Fluctuations of the vortex lattice at the lattice melting temperature. These topics served as initiators for a very great amount of discussions with many comments from the audience. More than forty "long lectures" and two "poster sessions" were held. Private discussions going unrecorded but obviously took place at many locations : lecture halls, staircases, cafetaria, bedrooms, bars, beach, . . .

Book Description
Since their discovery in 1986, high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) are considered interesting physical systems as well as attractive candidates for a variety of technical applications. In both cases one of the key aspects to be understood is the mechanism of power dissipation, which depends primarily on vortex dynamics: the movement of magnetic flux lines in the superconductor when a transport current is applied. The present work studies vortex dynamics in experiments on two of the most prominent types of HTSC materials, YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (BSCCO), in the limit of low and high current densities. Both, the applied transport current density and the dimensionality of the materials, strongly influence the dynamic response. For the low current limit in BSCCO this thesis concentrates on the influence of oxygen stoichiometry and in YBCO on a vortex glass phase, which indicates a true superconducting state with vanishing linear resistivity. In the high current limit, for the first time, a vortex instability is shown to exist in BSCCO, apparently arising from a fluid phase, while a similar phenomenon in YBCO reveals a clear correlation of the high-dissipative instability to the low-dissipative vortex glass phase. The author: A native of Hamburg, Germany, Patrick Voss-de Haan studied physics at Stanford University and the University of Mainz. After completing a degree in the area of atomic physics and laser spectroscopy he began his work in solid state physics and superconductors, from which this Ph.D. thesis was compiled.

Book Description
Vortex pinning in superconductors with artificially introduced pinning arrays provides a controllable method for studying periodic systems moving in the presence of a periodic potential. Vortex pinning has applications that include enhancing critical current densities for superconducting transmission lines and reducing noise in a variety of devices based on superconductivity. Modern nanolithography enables the positioning of pinning structures at length scales similar to the vortex interaction length in superconductors. This provides the means to manipulate the potential-energy landscape and to study vortex dynamics under tunable conditions. Although the role of disorder and defects in a lattice is of great importance in condensed-matter physics, it has received little attention in the context of vortices. While the extreme case of intrinsic defects lacking any order has previously been studied, there have been few attempts to study partially ordered systems. This dissertation studies the effects on the vortices of different types of controlled partial order in pinning site lattices. Experiments clarifying the origin of the ratchet effect in vortex systems have been performed. It has previously been shown that in a non-symmetric vortex potential, an AC current can be applied to a superconducting system and a DC voltage will emerge. The DC voltage can undergo a ratchet reversal, where the sign of the DC voltage changes. An experiment testing the origin of the DC ratchet reversal has been performed and compared to several theories. The effects of different current density configurations are explored in circular geometries. In the Corbino geometry, current is injected in the center of a superconducting disc and travels radially outwards towards the edges causing a tangential shearing force on the vortex lattice. This dissertation studies the Corbino geometry in the presence of different periodic potentials, and shows that the vortex lattice undergoes a shearing transition due to the pinning sites. Finally, several ongoing projects and international collaborations are presented. Measurements of the vortex lattice using microwave magnetic susceptibility measurements, neutron scattering, and magnetic force microscopy are discussed. A computer simulation of the vortex lattice is presented, and an experiment involving varying pinning site densities is described.

Book Description
Six papers by physicists from the Japan, India, Brazil and the US address some of the broad frontal issues of superconductivity, which include the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity, extra-high-temperature phenomena, the normal state pseudogap, the observations of the isotope effect in a host of different superconducting systems and their explanations, and the unusual features of strongly correlated electron systems like heavy fermions. Two extended papers explore the importance of positron annihilation and using electron spin resonance techniques to study superconducting materials. The treatments should be accessible to working scientists and engineers and to graduate students of physics, chemistry, materials science, solid-state electronics, and other disciplines.
