Book Description
We present results on time-dependent CP asymmetries in neutral B decays. The measurements use a data sample of about 88 million?(4S) → B{bar B} decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state and the other B meson is determined to be either a B° or {bar B}° from its decay products. Final states considered include B° → J/?K{sub S}°, B° → J/?K{sub L}°, B° → J/??°, B° → D* D*−, B° →?K{sub S}°, B° →?+?−, and B° →?{sup {+-}}?{sup {-+}}.

Book Description
The BABAR detector, which operates at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric ee−collider at energies near the [Upsilon](4S) resonance has collected about 23M B{bar B} pairs in year 2000. Based on this data sample, we present a first study of sin2[beta], with samples of B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub s}°, B° 2![psi](2S) K{sub s}° and B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub L}° decays. The measured value is sin2[beta] = 0.34 ± 0.20 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst). In addition, we present preliminary measurements of charged and neutral B meson lifetimes and B°{bar B}° oscillation frequency.

Book Description
We report the observation of CP violation in the B[sup 0] meson system. Using a novel technique for time-dependent measurements, we measure a non-zero value for the CP-violating amplitude sin2[beta] at the 4.1[sigma] level. We also report on precision measurements of the B[sup+] and B[sup 0] lifetimes and the B[sup 0][bar B][sup 0] mixing frequency[Delta]m[sub d] obtained with the same technique, and on a first measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating amplitude in B[sup 0][yields][pi][sup+][sup -] decays.

Book Description
This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book Description
We present an updated measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. This result uses an additional sample of [Upsilon](4S) decays collected in 2001, bringing the data available to 32 million B{bar B} pairs. We select events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in final state containing charmonium and the flavor of the other neutral B meson is determined from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is derived from the decay time distributions in such events. The result sin2[beta] = 0.59 ± 0.14 (stat) ± 0.05 (syst) establishes CP violation in the B° meson system. We also determine.

Book Description
This dissertation presents a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of about 88 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected between 1999 and 2002. We study events in which one neutral B meson decay to the CP-eigenstates J/[psi] K{sub S}°, [psi](2S)K{sub S}°, [chi]{sub c1}K{sub S}°, and [eta]{sub c}K{sub S}°, or to flavor-eigenstates involving D{sup (*)}[pi]/[rho]/a1 and J/[psi]K*°(K*° 2!K [pi]−), is fully reconstructed. The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly using the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper time elapsed between the meson decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2[beta], is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor- and CP-eigenstate samples. We measure sin2[beta] = 0.755 ± 0.074 (stat) ± 0.030 (syst).

Book Description
A new detector for investigating the CP violation mechanism in the B meson system is being built and is scheduled to take data at PEP II, the asymmetric B Factory in construction at SLAC, at the end of this century. Its main characteristics are briefly overviewed in this paper. Its sensitivity for measuring CP violation in some selected B decays is also discussed, underlining the great potential of this detector to accomplish a comprehensive study of this phenomenon.

The BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC collected a sample of 23 x 106 B{bar B} pairs in the years 1999 and 2000. Using this data sample, we measure the amplitude of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in neutral B decays to the CP eigenstates J/[psi] K{sub S}°, [psi](2S) K{sub S}° and J/[psi] K{sub L}°. We find a value of sin2[beta] = 0.34 ± 0.20(stat) ± 0.05(syst). We also present preliminary measurements of the B°{bar B}° oscillation frequency and of the lifetimes of charged and neutral B mesons.
