"Fairbanks, Alaska (64°49ʹ N, 147°52ʹ W) experiences strong temperature inversions which when combined with the low wind speeds prevailing during the winter cause serious air pollution problems. The SODAR (Sound Detection And Ranging) or acoustic sounder is a very useful instrument for studying the lower atmosphere as it can continuously and reliably measure the vertical profiles of wind speed and direction,vertical motions, turbulence and the thermal structure in the lower part of the troposphere. A Doppler sodar was operated from December 2005 to April 2006 at the National Weather Service site in Fairbanks. The wind observations from the sodar indicate that the majority of the winds during the winter months were from the North, Northeast or the East, which is in good agreement with the radiosonde measurements and the long term trends in the wind patterns over Fairbanks area. Case studies were carried out using the sodar data depicting drainage winds, low-level jets, formation and breakup of inversions and estimation of the mixing layer height"--Leaf iii.

The principal objectives of the research described in this report have been to achieve improved understanding of the basic physical processes involved in the dispersal of airborne material in the lower atmosphere; and, to establish empirical relationships between basic diffusion parameters and direct meteorological indicators that permit satisfactory quantitative estimates of dispersal from continuous point sources, over travel distances of the order of 1 km, in a wide variety of general weather conditions. These objectives have been achieved largely as the result of a series of comprehensive field observations involving simultaneous measurements both of diffusion and the structure of atmospheric turbulence. The diffusion measurements comprise 10-min average concentrations of sulfur-dioxide gas emitted from a continuous point source near ground level, at travel distances from 50 to 800 m from the release-point for the tracer. The meteorological observations include mean wind speeds, frequency distributions of azimuth oLnd direction, vertical profiles of wind speed and air temperature, and measurements of the fluctuations in wind velocity obtained from bivanes and heatedthermocouple anemometers. Over one hundred individual experiments of this type were carried out at Round Hill and at a field site near O'Neill, Nebraska during Project Prairie Grass, an extensive series of diffusion measurements sponsored by the Air Force Cambridge Research Center during the summer of 1956. These data comprise the most comprehensive set of small-scale diffusion and meteorological observations currently available. It is shown that the formation and dissipation of clear air turbulence at several different altitudes is closely related to changes in the atmospheric mesostructure. The turbulence is located in the region of two sloping boroclinic zones and can be attributed to Kelvin-Helmholtz instability resulting from strong wind directional oscillations between these two stable layers. The meteorological sounding data reveal that the lower stable layer and the layer of strong directional oscillations undergo significant upward vertical displacement. The change in turbulence activity can be directly correlated with this motion, and the breakdown of the turbulence and the double stability structure occur almost simultaneously. (Author).
