Book Description
Excerpt from Studies From the Department of Physiology, Vol. 8: October, 1922 One point still remains to be discussed; that is, the bearing of the results with histamine upon the effects following occlusion of difierent vascular areas. The optical curves Show features in common, each presenting changes indicative of initial failure of normal dynamic relations. It might appear, therefore, that the occlusion efi'ects were caused by metabolic products with histamine - like action formed during the periods of stasis. There seems little doubt that such prod ucts may contribute to the effects of occlusion, but that they are not the main cause is evidenced, I believe, by the relatively large amounts of histamine necessary to initiate failure changes and by the observa tion recorded above that during the periods of reestablished circulation through the occluded part there are never indications of a dilating sub stance being carried into the general circulation. Book Description
Biology of Stress in Fish: Fish Physiology provides a general understanding on the topic of stress biology, including most of the recent advances in the field. The book starts with a general discussion of stress, providing answers to issues such as its definition, the nature of the physiological stress response, and the factors that affect the stress response. It also considers the biotic and abiotic factors that cause variation in the stress response, how the stress response is generated and controlled, its effect on physiological and organismic function and performance, and applied assessment of stress, animal welfare, and stress as related to model species. Provides the definitive reference on stress in fish as written by world-renowned experts in the field Includes the most recent advances and up-to-date thinking about the causes of stress in fish, their implications, and how to minimize the negative effects Considers the biotic and abiotic factors that cause variation in the stress response

Book Description
Pharmacokinetics, the study of the movement of chemicals within the body, is a vital tool in assessing the risk of exposure to environmental chemicals. This bookâ€"a collection of papers authored by experts in academia, industry, and governmentâ€"reviews the progress of the risk-assessment process and discusses the role of pharmacokinetic principles in evaluating risk. In addition, the authors discuss software packages used to analyze data and to build models simulating biological phenomena. A summary chapter provides a view of trends in pharmacokinetic modeling and notes some prospective fields of study.

Book Description
Fish Physiology: Physiology of Elasmobranch Fishes, Volume 34A is a useful reference for fish physiologists, biologists, ecologists, and conservation biologists. Following an increase in research on elasmobranchs due to the plight of sharks in today’s oceans, this volume compares elasmobranchs to other groups of fish, highlights areas of interest for future research, and offers perspective on future problems. Covering measurements and lab-and-field based studies of large pelagic sharks, this volume is a natural addition to the renowned Fish Physiology series. Provides needed comprehensive content on the physiology of elasmobranchs Offers a systems approach between structure and interaction with the environment and internal physiology Contains contributions by leading experts in their respective fields, under the guidance of internationally recognized and highly respected editors Highlights areas of interest for future research, including perspective on future problems
