Sayous continues directly with the themes of the first; Sayous himself saw his articles as a series, parts of an effort to establish the essential groundwork for a history of the development of capitalism in Western Europe. The full scope of his work can be seen from the bibliography. Though Sayous always insisted on the primacy of careful archival research, he was ready to take issue with theorists such as Sombart or Weber over the nature of capitalism, and echoes of the polemics are evident here. But the enduring merits of his work are its attention to detail and the fact that it gives a picture of how commercial and financial operations were actually run. Of the articles here, over half deal with the trade and monetary relations between Spain and its new American empire, noteworthy being the emphasis on the key role of the Genoese, and the treatment of the 16th-century Spanish mercantilists. The remaining articles carry the analysis forward to Augsburg and Amsterdam in the late 16th and 17th centuries.

How an antisemitic legend gave voice to widespread fears surrounding the expansion of private credit in Western capitalism The Promise and Peril of Credit takes an incisive look at pivotal episodes in the West’s centuries-long struggle to define the place of private finance in the social and political order. It does so through the lens of a persistent legend about Jews and money that reflected the anxieties surrounding the rise of impersonal credit markets. By the close of the Middle Ages, new and sophisticated credit instruments made it easier for European merchants to move funds across the globe. Bills of exchange were by far the most arcane of these financial innovations. Intangible and written in a cryptic language, they fueled world trade but also lured naive investors into risky businesses. Francesca Trivellato recounts how the invention of these abstruse credit contracts was falsely attributed to Jews, and how this story gave voice to deep-seated fears about the unseen perils of the new paper economy. She locates the legend’s earliest version in a seventeenth-century handbook on maritime law and traces its legacy all the way to the work of the founders of modern social theory—from Marx to Weber and Sombart. This collection reflects the evolution of a revisionist argument. The price revolution was indeed a monetary phenomenon, but Professor Flynn's position is not based upon mainstream monetary theory. Silver mines financed the Spanish Empire and Japan's consolidation. Ming China was the world's primary silver customer; Europeans acted as middlemen globally, including massive trade over the Pacific via Manila. American mines nearly led to the destruction of nascent capitalism in Europe (reverse of arguments by Hamilton, Keynes, Wallerstein and others). Silver-market disequilibrium caused silver's gravitation toward China; bullion did not flow to Asia due to European trade deficits. Such conclusions stem from application of the Doherty-Flynn model developed in the mid-1980s. Economic theory is normally applied to economic history; in contrast, development of the Doherty-Flynn model was a response to inadequate conventional theory. Theory emerged from history; its application back to history yields startling historical reinterpretations.

Dans le monde antique, le capitalisme ne s’est jamais appliqué à l’industrie ; chez les Grecs et même chez les Romains, on ne trouve que de petits métiers, travaillant pour des marchés locaux, et surtout une main-d’œuvre servile, qui a pour fonction de subvenir aux besoins de la familia, comme c’est le cas sur les latifundia romains... Dans la pratique, le mot capital est né assez tard et il a uniquement désigné la somme destinée à être placée (invested, comme disent les Anglais) et à rapporter un intérêt. C’est sans doute par extension que les économistes ont donné au mot le sens qui a prévalu dans la science économique. The 16th century saw the rise of movements of religious reform which, in Spain as elsewhere, contributed to make the history of the period such a ferment. In these essays Terence O’Reilly is concerned with the writings produced by these movements, notably Illuminism, the early Jesuits, Erasmianism, and the Carmelite reform, and with the mixture of medieval and new literary conventions that they display. The book first deals with Ignatius Loyola and his Spiritual Exercises, examining its origins in his experience of conversion and the books he read, and locating him not in the period of the militant Counter-Reform, but in an earlier world, linked to the teachings of 16th Spanish Erasmians and illuminists. One study, hitherto unpublished, presents the lost treatise in which the Dominican Melchor Cano argued that Ignatius was an alumbrado. The following sections move to the later the century, considering the connections between spirituality and literature in works such as the ode to Salinas and, above all, in the mystical poetry of John of the Cross and its basis in exegesis and liturgical and devotional texts.

This selection of articles is organized around three broad themes: the nature of the governing system in France (’Absolutism’); the political crisis of the mid-17th-century (the ’Fronde’); and the development of royal finance. The author first considers the growth of the French state in its ideological and institutional aspects, then the opposition such developments provoked, much centred on the figure of Cardinal Mazarin. In the last section particular attention is given to fiscal history, including a comparison of mid-18th-century France with the other states of Europe. Professor Bonney would argue that the ’fiscal imperative’, the increased requirements posed by the costs of war, and the long-term consequences of fiscal growth may be seen as one of the decisive factors in the development of the modern state.
