Book Description
Stress-distribution results are presented in pure bending tests of nine 24S-T Alclad cylinders of 20-inch diameter, 30- to 90-inch length, and 0.012-inch wall thickness, reinforced with 24S-T aluminum-alloy stringers and rings. On one side of the cylinder, situated symmetrically with respect to its horizontal plane of symmetry, there was a cutout extending over 12.9 inches or 19.3 inches in the longitudinal direction and over an angle of 45, 90, or 135 degrees in the circumferential direction. The strain in the stringers and in the sheet covering was measured with metalectric strain gages. All nine cylinders failed in general instability.

Book Description
A numerical procedure is presented for the calculation of the stresses in a monocoque cylinder with a cutout. In the procedure the structure is broken up into a great many units are calculated; a set of linear equations is established expressing the equilibrium conditions of the units in the distorted state; and the simultaneous linear equations are solved. A fully worked out numerical example, corresponding to the application of a pure bending moment, gave results in good agreement with experiments carried out earlier at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Book Description
A strain-energy theory was developed for the calculation of the buckling load in general instability of circular reinforced monocoque cylinders having a side cutout and subjected to pure bending. The theory was applied to two series of specimens, each containing three cylinders, which were tested and reported in Part 4 in this program at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn Aeronautical Laboratories. The average deviation between theoretical and experimental buckling load was 27.1 percent for the first series and 34.4 percent for the second.

Book Description
Stresses were calculated by a numerical method in three reinforced monocoque cylinders subjected to pure bending. The cylinders were of circular cross section and were reinforced with 8 rings and either 8 or 16 stringers. There was a cutout on one side of each cylinder located symmetrically to the neutral plane and extending over 45, 90, and 135 degrees. Satisfactory agreement was found between stresses calculated and those measured in Part 4 of the present series of investigations.

Book Description
Ten 24S-T cylinders of 20-inch diameter, 45- or 58-inch length, and 0.012-inch wall thickness, reinforced with 24S-T aluminum alloy stringers and rings were tested in pure bending. In the middel of the compression side of the cylinders there was a cutout extending over 19 inches in the longitudinal direction, and over an angle of 45, 90, or 135 degrees in the circumferential direction. The strain in the stringers and in the sheet covering ws measured with metalectric strain gages.

Book Description
A strain-energy theory similar to one developed earlier at PIBAL was established for the calculation of the buckling load in pure bending of reinforce monocoque cylinders which have a symmetric cutout on the compression side and buckle according to general-instability patterns. The difference between the present and earlier theories is the use of the axial wave length as an additional parameter whose value was determined from a minimum condition. The theory was applied to four cylinders which were tested earlier at PIBAL. Fair agreement was found between theory and the results of the experiments.

Book Description
A strain-energy theory is developed for the calculation of the buckling load in pure bending of reinforced monocoque cylinders which have a symmetric cutout on the compression side and buckle according to the general instability pattern. Computations are carried out for the cylinders tested earlier at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn Aeronautical Laboratories. The theoretical curve is similar in shape to that obtained experimentally, but the theoretical values are consistently too high. The deviation is 39.3 percent in the worst case.
