The Giant Canada Goose
Author: Harold Carsten Hanson

ISBN:
Category : Nature

Pages : 336
Book Description
"This revised edition is not an expanded version of the original, summarizing, for example, the dozens of studies that hve been made of the productivity of various subpopulations of the "Giant Canada Goose" since its rediscovery. Rather, the main objectives of this revised, slightly enlarged edition are to redefine the range of this race as it was originally understood and to correct earlier assumptions based on the literature as to racial identity of peripheral populations."--Page xvii.

Nesting Success, Gosling Growth, and Adult Body Condition of Giant Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis Maxima) in Southern Illinois

Book Description
Understanding factors that influence reproductive success is important for managing waterfowl populations. Current breeding density of giant Canada geese ( Branta canadensis maxima ) in the northern 2/3 of Illinois is three times greater than that of the southern 1/3 of Illinois. Previous research indicates that goose population abundance is most likely influenced by mortality of adults, nest success, and gosling growth. In this study, I examined the aspects of fecundity that are most likely to affect giant Canada goose reproduction in southern Illinois: clutch size, nest success, and gosling growth. The average clutch size was 5.0 eggs/nest, and the average nest success was estimated to be 60%. Adult male geese in northern and central Illinois tended to be in better body condition than males in southern Illinois. There was, however, no difference in adult body condition of females between northern, central, and southern Illinois.
