Book Description
Written by renowned experts in the field, this reissue of a textbook has as its unifying theme the role that probability models have had, and continue to have, in scientific and practical applications. It includes many examples, with actual data, of real-world use of probability models, while expositing the mathematical theory of probability at an introductory calculus-based level. Detailed descriptions of the properties and applications of probability models that have successfully modeled real phenomena are given, as well as an explanation of methods for testing goodness of fit of these models. Readers will receive a firm foundation in techniques for deriving distributions of various summaries of data that will prepare them for subsequent studies of statistics, as well as a solid grounding in concepts such as that of conditional probability that will prepare them for more advanced courses in stochastic processes.

Balakrishnan and Normal L. Johnson Discrete Multivariate Distributions by Samuel Kotz, N. Balakrishnan and Normal L. Johnson Univariate Discrete Distributions, 3rd Edition by Samuel Kotz, N. Balakrishnan and Normal L. Johnson Discover the latest advances in discrete distributions theory The Third Edition of the critically acclaimed Univariate Discrete Distributions provides a self-contained, systematic treatment of the theory, derivation, and application of probability distributions for count data. Generalized zeta-function and q-series distributions have been added and are covered in detail. New families of distributions, including Lagrangian-type distributions, are integrated into this thoroughly revised and updated text. Additional applications of univariate discrete distributions are explored to demonstrate the flexibility of this powerful method. A thorough survey of recent statistical literature draws attention to many new distributions and results for the classical distributions. Approximately 450 new references along with several new sections are introduced to reflect the current literature and knowledge of discrete distributions. Beginning with mathematical, probability, and statistical fundamentals, the authors provide clear coverage of the key topics in the field, including: Families of discrete distributions Binomial distribution Poisson distribution Negative binomial distribution Hypergeometric distributions Logarithmic and Lagrangian distributions Mixture distributions Stopped-sum distributions Matching, occupancy, runs, and q-series distributions Parametric regression models and miscellanea Emphasis continues to be placed on the increasing relevance of Bayesian inference to discrete distribution, especially with regard to the binomial and Poisson distributions. New derivations of discrete distributions via stochastic processes and random walks are introduced without unnecessarily complex discussions of stochastic processes. Throughout the Third Edition, extensive information has been added to reflect the new role of computer-based applications. With its thorough coverage and balanced presentation of theory and application, this is an excellent and essential reference for statisticians and mathematicians.

Book Description
This volume provides an up-to-date coverage of the theory and applications of ordered random variables and their functions. Furthermore, it develops the distribution theory of OS systematically. Applications include procedures for the treatment of outliers and other data analysis techniques. Even when chapter and section headings are the same as in OSII, there are appreciable changes, mostly additions, with some obvious deletions. Parts of old Ch. 7, for example, are prime candidates for omission. Appendices are designed to help collate tables, computer algorithms, and software, as well as to compile related monographs on the subject matter. Extensive exercise sets will continue, many of them replaced by newer ones.

Book Description
Provides state-of-the-art coverage for the researcher confronted with designing and executing a simulation study using continuous multivariate distributions. Concise writing style makes the book accessible to a wide audience. Well-known multivariate distributions are described, emphasizing a few representative cases from each distribution. Coverage includes Pearson Types II and VII elliptically contoured distributions, Khintchine distributions, and the unifying class for the Burr, Pareto, and logistic distributions. Extensively illustrated--the figures are unique, attractive, and reveal very nicely what distributions ``look like.'' Contains an extensive and up-to-date bibliography culled from journals in statistics, operations research, mathematics, and computer science.

Book Description
These three volumes constitute the edited Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work held at the University of Calgary from July 29 to August 10, ~. 974. The general title of the volumes is "Statistical Distributions in Scientific Work". The individual volumes are: Volume 1 - Models and Structures; Volume 2 - Model Building and Model Selection; and Volume 3 - Characterizations and Applications. These correspond to the three advanced seminars of the Institute devoted to the respective subject areas. The planned activities of the Institute consisted of main lectures and expositions, seminar lectures and study group dis cussions, tutorials and individual study. The activities included meetings of editorial committees to discuss editorial matters for these proceedings which consist of contributions that have gone through the usual refereeing process. A special session was organized to consider the potential of introducing a course on statistical distributions in scientific modeling in the curriculum of statistics and quantitative studies. This session is reported in Volume 2. The overall perspective for the Institute is provided by the Institute Director, Professor G. P. Pati1, in his inaugural address which appears in Volume 1. The Linnik Memorial Inaugural Lecture given by Professor C. R. Rao for the Characterizations Seminar is included in Volume 3. As discussed in the Institute inaugural address, not mL.
