Book Description
This paper presents the results of an investigation regarding the static and dynamic behaviours of a railway bridge being in service for more than 85 years. The age of the bridge and the recent introduction of a new type of freight train to operate at high speeds (above 95 km/h) made the bridge testing necessary. A full-scale railway bridge test is a complex and expensive undertaking involving cooperation of various departments in a railway organization. This fact limits this type of bridge evaluation to a few very important cases each year. A computerized data acquisitionsystem permitted recording strains and deflections from 21 strain guage circuits and 6 displacement transducers. A special test train was used to study the behaviour of the bridge under controlled loads and speeds. Measurements were also carried out for regular traffic (passenger and freight trains). This paper covers the following topics: (i) instrumentation and test loads; (ii) test results (static and dynamic stresses and deflections); (iii) comparisons of measured static stresses and deflections with theoretical values; and (iv) dynamic characteristics of the tested span (influence of train speed on stresses, deflections, and lateral forces).

Book Description
Many old riveted railway bridges are replaced too soon due to a general lack of knowledge about the expected life span. This indicates the need for more information on fatigue and brittle fracture of riveted bridges. This book unveils extensive research and literature results on riveted bridges' fatigue live and shows how to take fatigue properly i

Book Description
Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results discusses fundamental concepts of fatigue testing and results analysis. The book begins with a description of the symbols and nomenclature selected for the present book, mainly those proposed by the ASTM Committee E-9 on Fatigue. Fatigue testing methods are then discussed including routine tests, short-life and long-life tests, cumulative-damage tests, and abbreviated and accelerated tests. Separate chapters cover fatigue testing machines and equipment; instruments and measuring devices; and test pieces used in fatigue testing. The factors affecting test results are considered, including material, types of stressing, test machine, environment, and testing technique. The final two chapters cover the planning of test programs and the presentation of results. Test program planning involves the statistical design of a test series; specification and sampling of test pieces; and choice of test pieces, testing machines, and test conditions. The chief purpose of most fatigue tests is the experimental determination of the relation between the endurance and the magnitude of the applied stress range for the material and the specimen under consideration, and final results can be condensed into a table, graph, or analytical expression.
