Book Description
The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) Determine if short line railroads are a viable transportation alternative to abandonment; (2) Identify the key factors that determine short line success or failure; and (3) Compile a profile of a successful short line railroad to help guide the allocation of state financial assistance. A profile for a profitable short line railroad was developed. State financial assistance is recommended and program components presented. A list of additional recommended public policies is also presented. This study concluded that in the current environment, short line railroads are a viable transportation alternative. However, the long term financial survivability of short line roalroads as an industry is not assured.

Backwoods Railroads
Author: D. C. Jesse Burkhardt
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 174
Book Description
A reflection of the effects of highways--and their hugely subsidized trucks--upon railroads, and of the incompetence of the Southern Pacific. The trucks took much rail freight on the coast, the SP--partly through government rules & inertia--failed to meet the competition; many lines were closed, most of the rest were sold to small, hungry, competent firms. This is the story. It is well told in a style familiar to rail fans: lists of stations, engine rosters, control blocks. Abundant photos, a few in color. Current through the visit of the X2000 in mid-1993. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Economic Viability of Short Line Railroads

Book Description
The objective of the paper is to determine if short line railroads are an economically viable alternative to abandonment of rural rail branchlines. The objective is pursued through a survey that involves personal interviews of executives of 13 short line railroads in Iowa and Kansas, 309 shippers located on these railroads, and officials of the Iowa Department of Transportation. The executives and the shippers also completed detailed questionnaires. The shippers compared the performance of their short lines to that of their predecessor class I railroad on 17 price and service characteristics, Both grain and non-grain shippers rated the price-service performance of their short line as better than that previously provided by their class I railroad, with the grain shippers observing a greater improvement than the non-grain shippers. Shippers compared the performance of short lines to that of motor carriers on 13 price and service characteristics. Both grain and non-grain shipper groups rate their short lines as better than motor carriers on prices, but motor carriers are rated better than short lines on service characteristics related to market access, transit time, dependability of transit time, and frequency of service. The paper also specifies a profile of a profitable short line railroad. The profile contains several components including traffic, management and labor, relationship to class I railroads, financial, track quality, and state assistance. Results reveal that short lines offer a competitive transportation service and are economically viable, assuming that short line service can be profitably supplied in the long run. For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD number 872978.

Passage to Union

Pages : 426
Book Description
Conflicts of interest - at local, state, and regional levels - characterized railroad growth at every stage. Despite the stated aims of government and the railroad corporations to promote settlement and commerce, Ms. Gordon shows that the states lost control of these enterprises and lost the economic benefits of their traffic. Smaller towns withered as people and money flowed to larger cities. By 1900 the union that had emerged reflected the worst fears of railroad critics.
