Book Description
Excerpt from Wallace's American Trotting Register, Vol. 8: Containing the Pedigrees of Standard-Bred Trotters, and an Appendix of Non-Standard Animals, Published Under the Authority the National Association of Trotting-Horse Breeders The increase in the number of volumes, and the cost of the same when sold in sets, is becoming a serious matter to breeders. It there fore seems to be necessary to Condense entries into the smallest Space possible consistent with plainness and perspicuity. With the sire and dam given, and then followed with a reference to where the dam is registered for the extension of the pedigree, all the purposes of regis tration would be accomplished and much space saved. This saving of space must be effected in the brevity of the pedigree, for the historical features cannot be condensed. As a matter of course, every man wants his pedigrees inserted as fully as possible, even if each one should be Spread out over a whole page; but it must be remembered that the Register is not an advertising medium merely, but a condensa tion of all the facts necessary to trace all the lines, by reference, in every pedigree. The Register has reached a position which no other publication of the kind has ever achieved. Out of nothing it has grown to a posi tion of trust and power that is felt in all portions of the land, and the value of all trotting horses is very largely determined by whether their pedigrees are here recorded. This result never could have been reached had it not been for the great body of intelligent and honest breeders everywhere who stood by it in its hours of adversity as well as prosperity.
