Book Description
How To Use This Reference Catalog: This reference catalog's purpose is to assist in the research and knowledge of the woman's art of weaving. I have approached this research as an anthropologist, weaver, and educator. The priority of the proposed project was spruce root baskets, hats, mats, and novelty pieces (covered bottles), and incomplete pieces. The survey covers only the spruce root baskets, although several examples of toy baskets were examined. I suggest that a good way to understand how this catalog can assist you is by seeking information on the design, typology, weaves, collectors, and weavers of the baskets on exhibit. Begin by finding the catalog number from the display. There is a corresponding data sheet for every catalog number. The Data sheet and the Data Sheet Explanation will give a perspective from which to look at the baskets in the collection room. Please read the notes from the Conservator carefully before examining the collection. To get the most from time in the collection it is best to have a specific purpose for study, i.e. all baskets from a certain collector, specific designs, baskets made by a particular weaver, etc. I have surveyed the entire collection twice but could repeat this survey many times and still see new facets of the baskets. I hope this catalog assists in further research and gives the user a heightened appreciation for the rich native culture of Southeast Alaska and the craftswomen who created these cultural masterpieces.
