The production of various speed-enhancement devices has increased in order produce varied high-speed actions impacting performance and actions requiring maximal speed, acceleration, or agility. The purpose of this study was to compare and assess the effects of assisted sprint training (AST), resisted sprint training (RST), and free sprint training (FST) on kinematic factors in NCAA Division III collegiate soccer players (n= 37) during the acceleration and maximal velocity phase of a 36.6 meter (m) sprint. The study determined if differences exist between AST, RST, and FST in enhancing sprint time. The measurements of stride length and stride frequency were assessed as important kinematic variables affecting sprint time. The subjects, using their assigned training modality, underwent a 6-week, 12-session training program. The training progression started with 10 meters (m) and ended with 60 m sprints. Sprints were recorded by video and digitized using biomechanical analysis software. Pre-and post-tests for all three methods were compared using two-way repeated measures ANOVAs and Scheffe post-hoc tests were used to determine any differences among types of training groups. Significant improvement in split and interval times (9.1 m, 18.3 m, and 36.6 m) and stride lengths from the pre-to post-tests were indicated, but there were no differences in improvement among the training groups. Therefore, even though the use of RST and AST programs incorporating the bungees decreased sprint times in a 36.6 m run, it was not significant as compared to FST. Sprint speed development may be based on so many factors that it can be highly difficult to pinpoint where and how training throughout different stages of a sprint optimizes improved performance. It is important for coaches and strength and conditioning specialists to fully recognize specific ways to induce neuromuscular adaptations for sprinters.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between aerobic power and repeated sprint ability. Division III collegiate football players (n = 30) participated in the study. On the first day of testing, each subject completed the Yo Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 2 (YYI2). On the second day of testing, each subject completed a repeated sprint test using football specific work to rest ratios that included two rounds of 6 sprints. No significant relationship was found between end stage completed in the YYI2 and percent decrement in round one, round two, or total (p > .05). Two main limitations were identified in the study. The first was that the difficulty level of the YYI2 for the subjects was too high. The second was the lack of concealing from the subjects the number of total sprints that would be completed. While no significant relationship was found, practical implications could be useful for strength and conditioning coaches involved in the physical preparation of collegiate football players.

Repeated linear and change of direction (COD) ability has received little analysis in collegiate women soccer players. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in performance and rate fatigue between incoming freshmen and returning Division III collegiate women soccer players during a repeated shuttle-sprint (RSS) protocol that included a 10 m linear and 10 m COD component. Each sprint of the RSS test was a modification of the 505-agility test, and subjects completed 10 maximal shuttle sprints on 30-second cycles. Measurements taken were best and average time, and performance decrement for the linear, COD, and total time for each sprint, heart rate and blood lactate during the RSS. Independent t-tests and effect sizes were used to determine differences between groups. No significant differences were identified; however, average linear time showed that there was a moderate effect between groups. All other performance and fatigue variables showed there were trivial to small effects between groups. Total time was more highly correlated to COD time compared to linear time. The results of this study indicate freshmen Division III women soccer players have similar abilities as returning players in repeated linear and COD sprint performance.
