Shows how sports history can illuminate the business, politics, class, race, gender, mores and values of a society. In pre-industrial Colorado, sports and games in Indian villages and early mining towns were shaped by work, community life, and even religion. As leisure time increased sport evolved into a more popular recreational activity.

Book Description
Known for more than just the Rocky Mountains, the gold rush and winter tourists, Colorado is a haven for athletes and sports teams that make waves in the sports world: * Carlos Gonzalez earned his first National League batting championship in 2010 with a .336 batting average; it was the seventh batting title in 18 years of franchise history. * On October 6, 1990, with no time remaining, the University of Colorado Buffaloes scored the game-winning touchdown over the University of Missouri after a strange referee error gave the Buffs a fifth down; the Buffaloes went on to win the National Championship. * Vail Ski Resort, the second largest ski resort in North America, was built because the United States Military held World War II training exercises for the Tenth Mountain Division in the area during the 1940s. * The Colorado Avalanche is the only team in NHL history to have won the Stanley Cup in its first year after being relocated; the team went on to win eight division championships and went to the playoffs 10 times in their first 10 seasons. * And more...

Book Description
Sports talk in America has evolved from small-time barroom banter into a major media smorgasbord that runs 24/7 on TV and radio. With hundreds of billions of dollars generated annually by pro and college teams in major markets nationwide, sports fans across the country are more dedicated than ever to their teams. And when it comes to sports talk -- especially all-sports radio -- it's all about entertainment, information, prognostication, analysis, rankings, and endless discussion. Prominent sports-media figures in each of the three target cities -- Cleveland, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. -- engage in this phenomenon with a compilation of sports lists sure to delight as well as stir up debate within these already-buzzing sports communities. List topics include: What were the most lopsided trades in local sports history? Who were the most overrated athletes to play in our town? What local athlete had the best appearance in TV or film? What was the most heartbreaking loss in local sports history? What was the greatest single play in local sports history? Who are our team's most hated rivals? Plus dozens of "guest" lists contributed by famous local sports and entertainment celebrities. Denver has franchises in each of the major pro sports -- the Broncos (NFL), the Avalanche (NHL), the Rockies (MLB), and the Nuggets (NBA). And no one knows Denver sports better than Irv Brown and Joe Williams.

Book Description
Colorado has a long, rich ice hockey history. The earliest references date back to January 28, 1893, from an article in the Rocky Mountain Sun . There have been many colorful teams, like the Colorado Rocky team, the Denver Spurs, and the Colorado Flames. On February 22, 1980, ice hockey suddenly vaulted onto the forefront of the American sports scene, due in large part of what is simply known as "the Miracle on Ice." The US men's ice hockey team had pulled off an incredible upset over the Soviet Union men's ice hockey team and then went on to win the gold medal over Finland. It gave the country a reason to celebrate and made the sport of ice hockey red hot! That "miracle" started in 1979 at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs with the selection of players at the 1979 National Sports Festival. Leadville, Steamboat Springs, Aspen, Colorado College, Denver University, Salida, Pueblo, and Fort Collins have all contributed to the "fastest game on ice."

Book Description
How do you measure the soul of a city? In Denver, for the better part of five decades it’s been by the Broncos. From an ugly and inauspicious beginning to the first nationally televised Monday-night game in 1973, through postseason games that included back-to-back World Championships and five other Super Bowl appearances, the Broncos have provided the Mile-High City’s primary identity on a national level. The nation’s first truly regional sports franchise, the Broncos were the first major league team to call Denver home, beginning play as a charter member of the American Football League, with its first season in 1960. In this newly revised edition of Game of My Life Denver Broncos, fans past and present will relive the greatest moments of Mile-High football through the eyes of the players themselves. Floyd Little shares the pride and joy of scoring a touchdown in his last game as a Bronco and John Elway describes the glory of leading the Broncos to their first Super Bowl victory in 1998. From those infamous striped socks to back-to-back Super Bowl Championships, Game of My Life Denver Broncos has it all—a must-have for any Broncos fan.
