Book Description
Experiments E155 and E155X at SLAC were polarized deep inelastic scattering measurements of the parallel and perpendicular scattering asymmetries. We extracted the polarized structure functions g1 and g2 of the proton and deuteron. Both experiments made precision measurements through a wide range in x and Q2. These data fall into the kinematic range between existing world data and have good consistency with them. In combination with the other world data, the results for g1 allow increased constraint on NLO QCD fits to the polarized structure functions. For g2 no significant world data existed before E155X. The E155X measurement provides information about the higher twist effects in the nucleon.

Book Description
Experiment E155 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) measured the longitudinal and transverse deep inelastic structure functions of the proton and deuteron using a polarized, 48.3 GeV electron beam and solid polarized targets of ammonia (15NH3) for proton measurements and lithium deuteride (6Li2H) for deuteron measurements. Three electromagnetic spectrometers at angles of 2.75{sup o}, 5.5{sup o}, and 10.5{sup o} measured the scattered electrons. This work presents an analysis of the longitudinal structure function of the proton, g1{sup p}(x, Q2). Included is a re-analysis of the proton target polarization data that for the first time corrects a problem encountered which altered those measurements.

Book Description
This volume contains the invited talks and contributed papers presented at the workshop on ?Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets?, held at the University of Virginia in April 2002.The workshop was proposed in the context of the large number of experiments that have used polarized deuterons or polarized 3He to extract information about the spin parameters of the neutron. The motivation for this workshop was to study the effects of the nuclear medium on the spin properties of the bound nucleon and to explore issues in QCD that might be resolved through spin observables in nuclear targets: What is the effect of the nuclear medium on the measured asymmetries? How have the latest results on the spin structure of the nucleon and the nucleon form factors changed our thinking? What advances are anticipated in the development of polarized targets?

The experiment E155 at SLAC measured the spin structure functions g1 and g2 of the proton and deuteron. The experiment used deep inelastic scattering of 48.3 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident on polarized solid 15NH3 and 6LiD targets. The data taken by three independent spectrometers covered a kinematic range of 0.014

Book Description
The SLAC experiment E155 was a deep-inelastic scattering experiment that scattered polarized electrons off polarized proton and deuteron targets in the effort to measure precisely the proton and deuteron spin structure functions. The nucleon structure functions g1 and g2 are important quantities that help test our present models of nucleon structure. Such information can help quantify the constituent contributions to the nucleon spin. The structure functions g1{sup p} and G1{sup d} have been measured over the kinematic range 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.9 and 1 ≤ Q2 ≤ 40 GeV2 by scattering 48.4 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons and deuterons. In addition, the structure functions g2{sup p} and g2{sup d} have been measured over the kinematic range 0.01 ≤ x ≤ 0.7 and 1 ≤ Q2 ≤ 17 GeV2 by scattering 38.8 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off transversely polarized protons and deuterons. The measurements of g1 confirm the Bjorken sum rule and find the net quark polarization to be [Delta][Sigma] = 0.23 ± 0.04 ± 0.6 while g2 is found to be consistent with the g2{sup WW} model.

Book Description
From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy and nuclear physics laboratories (CERN, DESY, SLAC and Jefferson Lab) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.
