Book Description
Excerpt from Speech of the Hon. James Chesnut, Jr.: Of South Carolina, Delivered in the Senate of the United States, April 9, 1860, on the Resolutions Submitted by the Hon. Jefferson Davis, of on 1st March, 1860 It is stated that one third of that eighty-four million justly belongs and should be credited to slave labor, or to the slave States, as they are called. Thus the value of the exports for the year 1859, from the slave holding States, would be over two hundred million dollars. The commercial and navigating interest of the country, which is almost entirely at the North, feeds, lives, and fattens on these exports. To what extent these branches of industry are involved, would be a question of interest to those who are concerned. But, sir, in times past - ih 17 88 - there were some wise men in New England, as there are some now. They understood this business and I will ask to read from the debates of the Massachusetts convention, showing to what extent they regarded their interest involved in the carrying of the southern productions. I will ask my friend to read for me from Elliott's Debates, volume 2. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Man Who Started the Civil War
Author: Anna Koivusalo
Publisher: Univ of South Carolina Press
ISBN: 1643363069
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 303
Book Description
A fresh biography of a neglected figure in Southern history who played a pivotal role in the Civil War. In the predawn hours of April 12, 1861, James Chesnut Jr. piloted a small skiff across the Charleston Harbor and delivered the fateful order to open fire on Fort Sumter—the first shots of the Civil War. In The Man Who Started the Civil War, Anna Koivusalo offers the first comprehensive biography of Chesnut and through him a history of honor and emotion in elite white southern culture. Koivusalo reveals the dynamic, and at times fragile, nature of these concepts as they were tested and transformed from the era of slavery through Reconstruction. Best remembered as the husband of Mary Boykin Chesnut, author of A Diary from Dixie, James Chesnut served in the South Carolina legislature and as a US senator before becoming a leading figure in the South's secession from the Union. Koivusalo recounts how honor and emotion shaped Chesnut's life events and the decisions that culminated in the cataclysm of civil war. Challenging the traditional view of honor as a code, Koivusalo illuminates honor's vital but fickle role as a source for summoning, channeling, and expressing emotion in the nineteenth-century South.

Speech of Hon. James Chesnut, of South Carolina, Delivered at Camden, September 28, 1859
Author: James Chesnut
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Southern States
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Chesnut offers his thoughts on the "condition, necessities, and future of the South ... I confess that I feel deep concern that I cannot perceive those bright tints with which many gild the future of the South ... Though we may be sitting in the sunlight of a tranquil moment, there are visible in the combinations around the portents of a coming storm--a storm whose raging power may prove sufficient to crack every rib in the good old ship ... At such time the prudent mariner will not close his eyes nor ignore the danger; he will be up and ready, struggling to avoid it, but if it must come to weather it if he can." Chesnut also discusses the Missouri compromise, Kansas Nebraska bill, and slave codes in the western territories.
