The heavy-ion collisions of 56Fe + 232Th, 86Kr + 232Th and {sup 136Xe} + 232Th with beam energies 15--20% above the Coulomb barrier were used to populate nuclei in the light-actinide region. Yield distributions of the binary reaction products stopped in thick targets were obtained by measuring [gamma]-[gamma] coincidence intensities. The 136Xe + 232Th reaction was repeated at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using a recent implementation of the GAMMASPHERE array. Many interesting discoveries concerning the high-spin structure of octupole-deformed light-actinide nuclei have been made.

The Second International Conference on Fission and Properties of Neutron-Rich Nuclei continued the emphasis on fission models, fission processes, properties of neutron-rich nuclei and new directions. The development of higher energies and better resolution in heavy-ion beams has led to a resurgence of interest in transfer reactions at energies well above the Coulomb barrier. Direct reactions with heavy ions are discussed in some detail. Heavy-ion reactions open up the possibility of new methods of spectroscopy, e.g., elastic transfer. Differential cross sections for heavy-ion ' transfer reactions are often featureless; however, some data show diffractive effects. The high angular momenta associated with recoil effects in heavy-ion reactions can be exploited to perform selective spectroscopy on light nuclei. Although most heavy-iontransfer data suggest that reactions proceed in a direct fashion, recent experiments indicate the presence of second-order multistep processes. Correlated nucleon transfer and transfer of many nucleons (e.g., (12C, alpha)) are also being investigated. (20 figures, 3 tables, 93 references) (RWR).
