The use of the infrared spectra for the quantitative analysis of the products of the oxidation of p-Cymene with acetic acid as the oxidizing agent is described and discussed in this article. A catalyst (cobalt bromide) was added to facilitate the oxidation which was performed at 100C. The analysis was conducted on IKS-12 in the 650-1000, 1650-2000, and 2500-3000/cm ranges. For the different tests, the thickness of the layer was varied from 0.03 to 0.1 cm. Chloroform was the solvent used. The spectra ordinates were taken every 5/cm, and all calculations were performed on the 'Ural 2' electronic computer. It was concluded that by using infrared spectra and the corresponding statistical methods, one can perform the analysis of a complex mixture of the products of a chemical reaction quickly and accurately. Using appropriate statistical models on electronic computers expedites the experimental phase of the development of this type of method. (Author).

While there are many books available on methods of organic and biochemical analysis, the majority are either primarily concerned with the application of a particular technique (e.g. paper chromatography) or have been written for an audience of chemists or for biochemists work ing mainly with animaltissues.
