Book Description
Dr J. Landi Dessy, Director of the Astronomical Observatory, Cordoba, Argentina, invited the International Astronomical Union to hold a Symposium in Cordoba in connection with the celebration of the Centennial of the Cordoba Observatory; the date of foundation is October 24, 1871. He proposed that the Symposium should deal with Spectral Classification and Multicolour Photometry as seven years had elapsed since the Symposium No. 24 in Saltsj6baden, and much development had occurred in the field. The invitation and the proposal were accepted by the IAU, and the Symposium was held in Villa Carlos Paz, near Cordoba, between October 18 and October 24, 1971. It was attended by about 50 scientists representing Argentina, Canada, Chile, Den mark, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Sweden, Switzerland, U.K., U.S.A., Vatican City State and Venezuela. The Symposium was divided into four sessions: 1. Classification of slit spectra, 2. Classification of objective-prism spectra, 3. Photometric classification, 4. Catalogues and documentation. It was decided not to include problems of calibration of absolute magnitudes and temperatures of stars but to refer this to a separate symposium. The contents of the present volume follow closely the programmes of the individual sessions of the Symposium. All the participants at the Symposium appreciated the excellent hospitality of their Argentinian hosts and the efficient help given by the staff ofthe Cordoba Observatory.

Book Description
The present volume contains papers presented during the Advanced Study Institute on the 'Structure and Evolution of the Galaxy' held under the auspices of the Science Committee, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Lagonissi near Athens, Greece between 8-19 September 1969. Seventeen astronomers from eight countries acted as lecturers in the Institute, which was attended by sixty-three students from twelve countries. All the lectures given in the Institute were included in the volume with the exception of two lectures given by Professor P. van de Kamp on 'Stellar Parallaxes' and 'Objects of Very Low Mass', the manuscripts of which were not submitted in time in order to be considered for publication. It is obviously impossible in a two-weeks course to cover the vast field of the Struc ture and Evolution of the Galaxy in all its aspects. Effort has been made, however, to give the students a general outline of the field. In addition to the lectures ample time was spent in discussions and personal contacts. In order to simplify the publica tion it was felt reasonable, however, not to include the discussions in the present volume.

Book Description
IAU Colloquium No. 71 had its immediate origins in a small gathering of people interested. in the optical and UV study of flare stars which took place during the 1979 Montreal General Assembly. We recognized that a fundamental change was taking place in the study of these objects. Space-borne instruments (especially lUE and Einstein) and a new genera tion of ground-based equipment were having a profound effect on the range of investigations it was possible to make. To extract maximum benefit from these new possibilities it would be necessary as never before to have good communication with colleagues in other disciplines, for instance,. with atomic and solar physicists. Similarly, studies of phenomena associated with the outer atmospheres of the late-type stars could now hope to give significant insights into certain aspects of solar activity. So, in view of the wide range of backgrounds of those participating, the meeting had an unusually high proportion of invited reviews while most of the contributed papers were presented as posters. It is gratifying that in the short time since the meeting a good deal of correspondence has been received from participants remarking on the success of this format. Once the decision had been taken in principle to hold the meeting, a very considerable amount of work fell on the two organizing committees, viz. the Scientific and Local Organizing Committees. The Scientific Organizing Committee was chaired by D.J. Mullan and consisted of A.D.
