Excerpt from Specimens of "King Alfred's Proverbs" With a Swedish Translation and a Glossary The glossary I have tried to draw up carefully. I have given an exposition of the most essential forms of each word, from old-english down to New - English. Thus every word in the glossary begins with the oldest form, and ends with the latest; and each early-eng lish word stands suo loco, and its place in the text is always indicated. Only a few words I have not been able to bring under this system, in as much as their root is lost, or rather not found in the old literature; such words, however, I have marked as having no cer tain root in old-english. As it may undoubtedly interest the Swedish Scholar to see the near connection between the dialects of our Scandinavia and the old vernacular speech of England, I have added to the Swedish translation of each word, the Icelandic and Danish synonyms where the affinity is evident.
