Book Description
This book proposes a number of promising models and methods for adaptive segmentation, swarm partition, permissible segmentation, and transform properties, as well as techniques for spatio-temporal video segmentation and interpretation, online fuzzy clustering of data streams, and fuzzy systems for information retrieval. The main focus is on the spatio-temporal segmentation of visual information. Sets of meaningful and manageable image or video parts, defined by visual interest or attention to higher-level semantic issues, are often vital to the efficient and effective processing and interpretation of viewable information. Developing robust methods for spatial and temporal partition represents a key challenge in computer vision and computational intelligence as a whole. This book is intended for students and researchers in the fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence, especially those whose work involves image processing and recognition, video parsing, and content-based image/video retrieval.

Book Description
We describe a simple new technique for spatio-temporal segmentation of video sequences. Each pixel of a 3D space-time video stack is mapped to a 7D feature point whose coordinates include three color components, two motion angle components and two motion position components. The clustering of these feature points provides color segmentation and motion segmentation, as well as a consistent labeling of regions over time which amounts to region tracking. For this task we have adopted a hierarchical clustering method which operates by repeatedly applying mean shift analysis over increasing large ranges, using at each pass the cluster centers of the previous pass, with weights equal to the counts of the points that contributed to the clusters. This technique has lower complexity for large mean shift radii than regular mean shift analysis because it can use binary tree structures more efficiently during range search. In addition, it provides a hierarchical segmentation of the data. Applications include video compression and compact descriptions of video sequences for video indexing and retrieval applications.

Book Description
Spatio-temporal segmentation of video sequences attempts to extract backgrounds and independent objects in the dynamic senses captured in the sequences. It is an essential step of video analysis. It has important applications in video coding, video logging, indexing and retrieval, and more generally in scene interpretation and video understanding. We classify spatial-temporal grouping techniques into three categories (1) segementation with spatial priority, (2) segmentation by trajectory grouping, (3) joint spatial and temporal segmentation. The first category in the broadest, as it inherits the legacy techniques of image segmentation and motion segmentation. The other two categories place higher priority on the accumulation of evidence along the temporal dimension and are more recent developments made feasible by the increased availability of comupting power. For each category we provide a taxonomy of the techniques used to produce meaningful pixel groupings.

Book Description
In this book, the problem of video object detection has been addressed. The object is detected by integrating the spatial segmentation as well as temporal segmentation. The spatial segmentation of frames has been formulated in spatio-temporal framework. A Compound MRF model is proposed to model the video sequence. This model takes care of the spatial and the temporal distributions as well. Besides taking in to account the pixel distributions in temporal directions, it also model the edges in the temporal direction. This model has been named as edgebased model. The MAP estimates of the labels have been obtained by a hybrid algorithm and is devised by integrating that global as well as local convergent criterion. Similarly temporal segmentation is obtained by a proposed entropy based window growing scheme. The spatial and temporal segmentation have been integrated to obtain the Video Object Plane (VOP) and hence object detection.

Book Description
Spatio-Temporal Databases explores recent trends in flexible querying and reasoning about time- and space-related information in databases. It shows how flexible querying enhances standard querying expressiveness in many different ways, with the aim of facilitating extraction of relevant data and information. Flexible spatial and temporal reasoning denotes qualitative reasoning about dynamic changes in the spatial domain, characterized by imprecision or uncertainty (or both). Many of the contributions focus on GIS, while some others are more general, or focus on related application fields, presenting theoretical viewpoints and techniques that are inspiring or can be adapted for GIS. The first part bundles the contributions on advances at the theoretical level, also discussing examples and opening further perspectives. The second part presents contributions on well-developed applications. The authors explain how to handle imprecision and uncertainty, demonstrating how advanced techniques can help to solve diverse problems related to GIS.
