Destructive competition 'of Western grain with ours. That is true, also, in a considerable measure, of the'tobacco raised in Kentucky. This teaches us that we must resort to something more profitable than grain and tobacco. Mr. Edmund Atkinson; of Boston, the great statistician, in a paper read some time last year be fore one of the Northern Agricultural Associations, says that this com petion of Western products should not impair, and was not, in fact, impairing the value of lands in the Eastern States. He states that recent assessments of land in Massachusetts and New York prove their increased value since the commencement of the transportation of large quantities of grain to the Eastern States from the Western. He accounts for this by the farmers being driven to more profitable pur suits than grain raising, and instances the production of more grass and cattle, dairying and' fruit-raising. He suggests that the cheap bread stufi's and the comparatively 'cheap pork will enable farmers in the Eastern States to feed their families and hands at less cost, while they devote their labor to something more profitable. Our farmers should, . In the first place, devote more of their lands to clover and grass, where it can be grown successfully, and as a necessary sequence to the rais ing of more stock, which of course will be attended with the produc tion of more manure. The old Belgian proverb, though frequently quoted, will bear repetition: No grass, no cattle; no cattle, no ma nure. Yet I persuaded the lady where I lived to milk four cows the last winter that I staid in the country, whereof she found so good effect that she as sured me she would keep to my advice for the future; and also, as I have further urged, house them too; for which they have mighty conveniences, their tobacco-houses be1ng ever empty at that time of the year, and may easily be fitted in two or three days' time without any prejudice; whereby their cattle would be much sheltered from those pinching sharp frosts that some nights on a sudden become very severe. While there may be occasionally an accumulation beyond local wants, generally the educational districts are necessitous. In 1785 and 1803, Congress in Organizing territorial governments reserved the 16th section of every township for schools in that township. In 1848, the reservation was doubled, but no Southern State gets the benefit of this princely increase. From the school Officers of every State comes up an earnest cry for more money.
