Bourgeoisie, State and Democracy
Author: Graeme Gill
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191562610
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 397
Book Description
One of the key questions in social science is the role of the bourgeoisie in creating a democracy. An important issue in contemporary international politics is the trajectory of the current Russian political system. This book brings these questions together by exploring the role played by the bourgeoisie in shaping political outcomes in five countries: contemporary Russia, and industrial revolution Britain, France, Germany and the USA. Its main focus is the way the different new business classes have been integrated into the political system, and the implications this had for the political trajectories of the respective countries. The contemporary Russian experience is thrown into relief by comparison with the national experiences of the other four countries, enabling conclusions to be drawn about both the general question of the historic role of this class in democratisation and the more specific question of its role in Russia today.

Insuring the Industrial Revolution
Author: Robin Pearson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351927310
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 374
Book Description
Fire had always been one of the greatest threats to an early modern British society that relied on the naked flame as the prime source of heating, lighting and cooking. Yet whilst the danger of fire had always been taken seriously, it was not until the start of the eighteenth century that a sophisticated system of insurance became widely available. Whilst a number of high profile fires during the seventeenth century had drawn attention to the economic havoc a major conflagration could wreak, it was not until the effects of sustained industrialization began to alter the economic and social balance of the nation, that fire insurance really took off as a concept. The culmination of ten years of research, this book is the definitive work on early British fire insurance. It also provides a foundation for future comparative international studies of this important financial service, and for a greater level of theorising by historians about the relationship between insurance, perceptions of risk, economic development and social change. Through a detailed study of the archives of nearly 50 English and Scottish insurance companies founded between 1696 and 1850 - virtually all the records currently available - together with the construction of many new datasets on output, performance and markets, this book presents one of the most comprehensive histories ever written of a financial service. As well as measuring the size, market structure and growth rate of insurance, and the extent to which the first industrial revolution was insured, it also demonstrates ways in which insurance can be linked into wider issues of economic and social change in Britain. These range from an examination of the joint-stock company form of organization - to an analysis of changing attitudes towards fire hazard during the course of the eighteenth century. The book concludes by emphasising the ambivalent character of fire insurance in eighteenth and early nineteenth century Britain, contrasting the industry's dynamic long-run rate of growth with its more conservative attitude to product design and diversification.

Alcohol in the British Isles from Roman Times to 1996
Author: David W. Gutzke
Publisher: Greenwood
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
With nearly 2,200 citations, this bibliography covers every aspect of the history of alcohol in the British Isles from types of beverages and industries to medicine, politics, and critics. Sources cited range from a 1770 study to 1996 titles and include works written by historians, sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, and archaeologists. In addition to books and articles, the volume lists unpublished manuscripts, essays in edited works, Ph.D. dissertations, and M.A. theses. Annotations provide information about a work's thesis or theme, use of primary materials, relationship to other studies, and also give a critical evaluation and the location of rare materials. Though scholarly studies form the core of the book, works that use some primary sources such as autobiographies, diaries and memoirs are also included. The material is arranged topically. Initial chapters are devoted to specific beverages, including beer, wine, whisky, and cider, and the malt and hops industries. Chapters then cover key subjects such as advertising, consumption trends, science and technology, politics, drinking establishments, regulation, crime, medicine, tokens, inn signs, temperance, and guilds. The final chapter identifies works on or by key figures, starting with biographies.
