Book Description
Excerpt from Sonnets Other Poems The compiler of this volume, a short time since, announced his intsu tion to publish a volume of Selections, in Poetry and Prose, from the Writings of william lloyd garrison. On examination, he found a much greater amount and variety of Poetry than be anticipated and being impressed with a conviction that Mr. Garrison's numerous friends and admirers would be glad to see it in a separate volume, for cheap cir culation, as well as embodied in a larger work, he has ventured to pub lish it in its present form. For the publication of these Poems, Mr. Garrison is not otherwise responsible than in having kindly given his consent to it, for the personal gratification of his friends. They are simply the unstudied effusions of hours given to relaxation from the arduous labors arising from his con nexion with the Anti Slavery Enterprise and were written without any thought of their being collected together in a volume. Having made no pretensions, therefore, to be considered a Poet, he may justly claim to be measured by his own standard, rather than by that of the critic. In the judgment of the compiler, however, the contents of this volume will not only bear the test of candid criticism, but secure for the author an honor able place among the Poets of our country. Book Description
Excerpt from Sonnets and Short Poems Was sad; and when old age shall claim you, child, Your heart with young despair shall still be wild And childish mirth shall still light up your eyes. Because a banished spirit in you dwells, That strayed from lands beyond the unfurrowed sea, And frets rejecting its captivity; You hear the horns of the forbidden chase, The happy ghosts that down the woodland race And gallop through the trampled asphodels.quand vous serez bien vieille. When you are old, no man will start to hear That you were once more lovely than the day; Old age may change but cannot take away From you; and you will meet him without fear. Yet when you think of him who loved fair things And singing Of all beauty sang but you, Nor dreamed you guessed the secret of his strings, Then say: Although he knew it not, I knew. I shall be dead and mid the shadowy throng In the long twilight I shall not forget You still shall tread the earth with royal grace; And if you smile remembering my song, A moonbeam to the kingdoms of regret Will come and ood with light the sunless place. Book Description
This 1865 edition was first printed in 1609 in London. Now, centuries after the Bard of Avon's death, his works remain popular, sought after, and worth republishing. This collection of sonnets is no different. This edition puts Shakespeare's fine 14-line poems in the spotlight, as it is devoid of any foreword, introduction, or any other type of writing but the sonnets. It includes all but one image - which is placed at the beginning of the book. In the absence of sonnet titles, the publishers did not make use of a table of contents. An index of first lines is provided instead, making it easier for the ardent Shakespeare fan to locate a particular sonnet out of the 154 included in the collection. It is delightful to discover that each page contains only a single sonnet, which facilitates clarity and ease of reading, aside from a satisfyingly "uncluttered" look. Reading the sonnets, one cannot but help sighing with delight at the beautiful rhymes and lines. The choice of words, combined with the fact that they do sound well with each other, makes lovers of the written word sigh with utter delight and joy. The romance oozing from virtually every line in Shakespeare's sonnets makes one keep reading one poem after the other compulsively. The clever themed grouping of the sonnets adds to the page-turning appeal of this edition. All in all, this is one volume to carry about, read, and re-read, especially when one needs a healthy dose of creative, or romantic, inspiration.
