Book Description
Excerpt from Songs of the University of Virginia T does seem remarkable that out of the long decades of song and romance which have clustered themselves about this old University, there has never before come a collection of her songs. There is no other institution in this broad land where song and student life have been more closely interwoven. There is hardly an evening, whatever be the season, that the casual stroller does not hear the song of the reveler floating out across the Lawn, straying down from Carr's Hill, or at best those brave attempts at close harmony, struggling thitherward from The Corners. The Virginia Glee Club has made an enviable reputation, gathering its material from these wayward sources, but with the exception of the Glee Club there has been no organ wherein these songs of our Alma Mater might assume permanent form, both for their preservation and wider circulation. Every Alumnus should have a copy of his University Song Book in his home; it will renew the old spirit; it will refresh the old memories; it will make you a firmer and truer son of the old Alma Mater. Book Description
“A truly comprehensive, multi-perspective, and up-to-date survey of the undeniable role of music in Woolf ’s life and writings” (Music and Letters). Through Virginia Woolf's diaries, letters, fiction, and the testimony of her contemporaries, this fascinating volume explores the inspiration and influences of music—from classical through mid-twentieth century—on the preeminent Modernist author of Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, A Room of One’s Own, and other masterful compositions. In a letter to violinist Elizabeth Trevelyan, Woolf revealed: “I always think of my books as music before I write them.” In a journal entry she compared herself to an “improviser with [my] hands rambling over the piano.“ Approaching the author’s career from a unique perspective, Virginia Woolf and Music examines her musical background; music in her fiction and her own critical writings on the subject; its importance in the Bloomsbury milieu; and its role within the larger framework of aesthetics, politics, gender studies, language, and Modernism. Illuminating the rich nature of Woolf's works, these essays from scores of literary and music scholars are “a fascinating and important contribution to scholarship about Virginia Woolf, music, and interdisciplinary art” (Music Reference Services Quarterly).

Book Description
Folk-Songs of the South: Collected Under the Auspices of the West Virginia Folk-Lore Society is a collection of ballads and folk-songs from West Virginia. First published in 1925, this resource includes narrative and lyric songs that were transmitted orally, as well as popular songs from print sources. Through 186 ballads and songs and 26 folk tunes, this collection archives a range of styles and genres, from English and Scottish ballads to songs about the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the opening of the American West, boat and railroad transportation, children's play-party and dance music, and songs from African American singers, including post-Civil war popular music. The original introduction by Cox contains vibrant portraits of the singers he researched, with descriptions of performance style and details about personalities and attitudes. With a new introduction by Alan Jabbour, this reprint renews the importance of this text as a piece of scholarship, revealing Cox's understanding of the workings of tradition across time and place and his influence upon folk-song research.
