A total of 374,968 summer chum salmon were estimated to have passed the sonar site. A beach seine sample fishery was conducted to collect age, sex, and length (ASL) and genetic information. Both systems functioned well with minimal interruptions to operation. The range of ensonification was considered adequate for most fish that migrated upstream.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), actively manages chum salmon fisheries in the Yukon River drainage. The purpose of the Anvik River sonar project is to monitor escapement of summer chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and pink salmon O. gorbuscha in the Anvik River drainage, believed to be the largest producer of summer chum salmon in the Yukon River drainage (Hayes et al. 2008, Larson et al. 2017). Timely and accurate reporting of information from the Anvik River sonar project helps Yukon River fishery managers ensure the Anvik River Biological Escapement Goal (BEG) of 350,000 to 700,000 summer chum salmon is met (ADF&G 2004). This assessment is necessary to determine if summer chum salmon abundance will meet downstream harvest and upstream escapement needs. Fishery openings and closures may be based in part upon this assessment. This project uses imaging sonar equipment on the Anvik River to generate timely, in-season passage estimates of salmon (Brodersen 2021). Beach seine sampling is conducted to collect biological data used in characterizing the summer chum salmon run and tower estimates are used to apportion passage estimates to species. The project site is located approximately 76 km upstream from the mouth of the Anvik River (Figures 1 and 2) and is scheduled to operate continuously from approximately June 16 through July 26, 2023.

Timing of the 2014 summer chum salmon run was 2 days early at the first quartile, and 3 days early at the third quartile compared to the average historic run timing based on 1979-1984 and 1987-2013 runs. Female summer chum salmon accounted for 54.6% of the entire summer chum salmon run. Age 0.3 summer chum salmon made up an estimated 44.8% of the passage; age 0.4 accounted for 48.3%. Both sonar systems functioned well with minimal interruptions to operation. Range of ensonification was considered adequate for most fish that migrated upstream.

Adaptive resolution imaging sonar (ARIS) and split-beam sonar equipment were used to estimate Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and fall chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta passage in the Yukon River near Eagle, Alaska from June 30 to October 6, 2015. A total of 84,015 Chinook salmon were estimated to have passed the sonar site between June 30 and August 15. The midpoint of the Chinook salmon run occurred on July 23, which was 2 days early relative to the historical mean date of July 25. An estimated 112,095 fall chum salmon passed between August 16 and October 6. The sonar-estimated passage of fall chum salmon was subsequently expanded to a total passage estimate of 125,095 to include fish that may have passed after operations ceased. The midpoint of the expanded fall chum salmon estimate occurred on September 25, which is 3 days later than the historical mean date. Subtracting the preliminary subsistence catch upstream of the sonar site resulted in an estimated border passage of 83,674 Chinook salmon and 112,555 fall chum salmon. Drift gillnetting was conducted to collect age, sex, and length samples and tissue samples for genetic information. Species composition was also recorded to determine when the Chinook salmon run ended and the fall chum salmon run began.
