Recurrent events experienced by individual units or systems occur in many fields. The main target of this thesis is to develop formal tests for certain features of recurrent event processes, and to discuss their properties. In particular, carryover effects and time trends are considered. The former is related to clustering of events together in time, and the latter refers to a tendency for the rate of event occurrence to change over time in some systematic way. Score tests are developed for models incorporating carryover effects or time trends. The tests considered are easily interpreted and based on simple models but have good robustness properties against a range of carryover and trend alternatives. Asymptotic properties of test statistics are discussed when the number of processes approaches infinity as well as when one process is under observation for a long time. In applications involving multiple systems or individuals, heterogeneity is often apparent, and there is a need for tests developed for such cases. Allowance for heterogeneity is, therefore, considered. Methods are applied to data sets from industry and medicine. The results are supported by simulation studies.

The analysis of past developments of processes through dynamic covariates is useful to understand the present and future of processes generating recurrent events. In this study, we consider two essential features of recurrent event processes through dynamic models. These features are related to monotonic trends and clustering of recurrent events, and frequently seen in medical studies. We discuss the estimation of these features through dynamic models for event counts. We also focus on the settings in which unexplained excess heterogeneity is present in the data. Furthermore, we show that the violation of the strong assumption of independent gap times may introduce substantial bias in the estimation of these features with models for event counts. To address these issues, we apply a copula-based estimation method for the gap time models. Our approach does not rely on the strong independent gap time assumption, and provides a valid estimation of model parameters. We illustrate the methods developed in this study with data on repeated asthma attacks in children. Finally, we propose some goodness-of-fit procedures as future research.

The analysis of the existence and form of time trends in repairable systems is an important issue in reliability studies. Hence, many trend tests have been proposed and studied in the literature. There has been a recent interest in the use of robust trend tests based on estimating functions to test the absence of time trends in the rate functions of recurrent event processes. These tests are appealing because they do not require strong assumptions about the nature of the processes, and are powerful in a wide range of settings. In this study, we consider monotone time trends in recurrent event data from repairable systems, and develop a robust trend test based on rate functions of the power law processes. Our main goal is to discuss the power of robust trend tests as well as to compare their power with other well-known trend tests under various settings. We therefore conducted extensive Monte Carlo simulations to compute and compare the power of these tests under various scenarios. Finally, we analyze two data sets from industry to illustrate the methodology.
