Guidelines for Ramp and Interchange Spacing
Author: Brian Ray (Engineer)
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 0309155487
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 687: Guidelines for Ramp and Interchange Spacing explores guidelines for ramp and interchange spacing based on design, operations, safety, and signing considerations. The report is designed to help aid the decision-making process when an agency is considering new ramps or interchanges on existing facilities, modifying ramps and interchanges of existing facilities, or when planning and designing new highway and interchange facilities. The guidelines also offer standardized definitions measuring ramp and interchange spacing, which have varied in previous design guides. A final report documenting the full research effort related to the development of NCHRP Report 687 was published as NCHRP Web-Only Document 169--

Adaptability of Interchanges to Multilane Divided Highways and Freeways
Author: Ziya Aytan Ediz
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Express highways
Languages : en
Pages : 246
Book Description
Interchanges play a very significant role in the safe and efficient operation of freeways and multilane divided highways. Freeways are the road facilities that provide uninterrupted flow, i.e. there is full control of access and furthermore, access and egress to these facilities can only be made through interchanges. The proper selection, design and construction of these facilities are very important for efficient and safe operation of freeway and multilane highway systems. The main goal of this study was to develop guidelines to aid designers in the selection of the proper interchange type at a location, which will provide a starting point for design and analysis. The study included a literature review on interchange characteristics and interchange selection methods, identification of differences between the operational characteristics of the different interchange types and identification of traffic conditions influencing the operations of the various interchange types. For developing guidelines to select the suitable interchange type, Highway Capacity Manual analysis methods were used through the implementation of Highway Capacity Software. In analyzing the operations of system interchanges, merging/diverging ramps and weaving areas were considered, and for the analysis of service interchanges, unsignalized and signalized intersection analyses were accomplished. Guidelines were developed for selecting the suitable interchange types which make use of the tables and charts from the capacity analysis.
