If this be true and molding-sand characteristics provide a considerable body of supporting evidence, then the temperingw water of max imum green compression strength is a meas ure of the maximum amount of water that can be held with the water molecules in about perfect orientation. The sodium montmorillonite retains about completely oriented water molecules to a thickness of 3 molecules (about 9 a.u.) on each basal unit surface and calcium montmorillonite to a thickness of 4 molecules (about 12 a.u.) on each basal unit surface. This volume is the edited proceedings of a conference seeking to clarify the possible role of clays in the origin of life on Earth. At the heart of the problem of the origin of life lie fundamental questions such as: What kind of properties is a model of a primitive living system required to exhibit and what would its most plausible chemical and molecular makeup be?
