Excerpt from The Reptiles of Western North America, Vol. 1: An Account of the Species Known to Inhabit California and Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, British Columbia, Sonora and Lower California' Lizards The term reptile is popularly applied to all cold-blooded vertebrates other than fishes. Thus used, it includes two groups of animals which differ in many important respects. These are the amphibians and the reptiles proper, the former more closely, allied to the fishes; the latter, to the birds. The typical amphibians, such as most frogs, toads, sala manders, and newts, lay their eggs in the water, and the young, for a time, breathe by means of gills, very much as do the fishes. Later on, they undergo a metamorphosis, during which the gills and other larval characteristics dis appear, the tadpole assumes the form and structure of its parents and emerges from the water to breathe air and spend a greater or less portion of its life on land. Excerpt from The Story of the Amphibians and the Reptiles Looking more carefully at the difference between the two directions of the new education we can see what each accomplishes. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching. The book knowledge, containing as it does the precious lesson of human experience, may be so taught as to bring with it only dead rules of conduct, only dead scraps of information, and no stimulant to original thinking. Its contents may be memorized without being understood. On the other hand, the self-activity of the child may be stimulated at the expense of his social well-being - his originality may be cultivated at the expense of his rationality. If he is taught persistently to have his own way, to trust only his own senses. To cling to his own Opinions heedless of the experience of his fellows, he is pre paring for an unsuccessful, misanthropic career, and is likely enough to end his life in a madhouse. It is admitted that a too exclusive study of the knowledge found in books, the knowledge which is aggregated from the experience and thought of other people, may result in loading the mind of the pupil with material which he can not use to advantage. Excerpt from Report of the Provincial Museum of Natural History: For the Year 1936 The first attempt to catalogue the reptiles and amphibians occurring within the boundaries Of the Province of British Columbia was that Of John Keast Lord in the appendix to his The Naturalist in Vancouver Island and British Columbia, published in In this. He names sixteen species. Unfortunately, Lord was notoriously careless concerning geographic location and his records have to be discounted accordingly. In 1898 John Fan-nin, in A Preliminary Catalogue of the Collections of Natural History and Ethnology in the Provincial Museum, lists eight reptilian species and subspecies and seven amphibian species as included in the fauna of the Province. N 0 further attempt was made to catalogue our amphibians and reptiles until that Of Logier in 1932, in which twenty-eight species and subspecies are listed. While much of British Columbia is still terra incognita in so far as knowledge of our vertebrate fauna is concerned, most Of the least - known territory lies north of latitudes favourable for habitation by reptiles and amphibians. Particularly is this true with regard to reptile-s. For these the northernmost record is but a few minutes north of the 5-3rd parallel. Accordingly, while it is realized that future collecting will extend. Our knowledge of the distribution of many forms, and perhaps add a few new names to the list, it is thought that a summation of our knowledge to date, while making no claims to finality, may serve to stimulate investigation.
