Book Description
"The objectives of this research were to experimentally investigate the effects of organic solvents, entrained during solution purification by solvent extraction, on the zinc electrowinning efficiency and the characterization and evaluation of zinc electrolytes produced from waste oxides generated by the Ausmelt Pyroprocessing. The removal of cadmium ions from di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) solvent extractant using different zinc solid reductants, and the dissolution of metallic Zn, Cd, and Pb in D2EHPA were also part of the present study. The results have shown that the entrainment of D2EHPA, in the loaded spent electrolyte significantly affect the current efficiency of zinc electrowinning, but the detrimental effects can be eliminated by purifying the contaminated electrolyte with activated carbon. The results obtained using the Ausmelt electrolytes showed that these solutions can be successfully electrolyzed but rather extensive purification is required and control of the solution overpotential is essential. The removal of Cd from D2EHPA was successfully accomplished using the galvanic stripping technique. It was found that zinc solid reductant alloyed with lead was superior to pure zinc for cadmium recovery and changes in the deposit morphology by the reaction/settling procedure enhance cadmium removal. The overall cadmium cementation is complex and is very dependent on oxygen content, temperature, agitation and type of zinc used. The results of the dissolution of Zn, Pb, and Cd powders in D2EHPA showed that a certain amount of water was necessary for a reaction to occur and the other variables, such as oxygen content, temperature, and agitation became significant only if the moisture condition was satisfied"--Abstract, leaf iv

Book Description
This book describes and explains the methods by which three related ores and recyclables are made into high purity metals and chemicals, for materials processing. It focuses on present day processes and future developments rather than historical processes. Nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals are key elements for materials processing. They occur together in one book because they (i) map together on the periodic table (ii) occur together in many ores and (iii) are natural partners for further materials processing and materials manufacturing. They all are, for example, important catalysts – with platinum group metals being especially important for reducing car and truck emissions. Stainless steels and CoNiFe airplane engine super alloys are examples of practical usage. The product emphasises a sequential, building-block approach to the subject gained through the author's previous writings (particularly Extractive Metallurgy of Copper in four editions) and extensive experience. Due to the multiple metals involved and because each metal originates in several types of ore – e.g. tropical ores and arctic ores this necessitates a multi-contributor work drawing from multiple networks and both engineering and science. - Synthesizes detailed review of the fundamental chemistry and physics of extractive metallurgy with practical lessons from industrial consultancies at the leading international plants - Discusses Nickel, Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals for the first time in one book - Reviews extraction of multiple metals from the same tropical or arctic ore - Industrial, international and multidisciplinary focus on current standards of production supports best practice use of industrial resources

Book Description
The hydrometallurgical papers of Volume IV highlight optimization efforts in solvent extraction/electrowinning operations in North and South America. Biohydrometallurgy, for example, not only takes a key role in copper recovery in many leach operations but offers a new role in cost-effective environmental remediation. The discussions of several approaches to the treatment of copper sulfide concentrates emphasize the high level of interest in finding alternative means of recovering copper and precious metals and avoiding many of the costs and impurity issues associated with the conventional processing.

Book Description
Biovalorisation of Wastes to Renewable Chemicals and Biofuels addresses advanced technologies for converting waste to biofuels and value-added products. Biovalorisation has several advantages over conventional bioremediation processes as it helps reduce the costs of bioprocesses. Examples are provided of several successfully commercialized technologies, giving insight into developing, potential processes for biovalorisation of different wastes. Different bioprocess strategies are discussed for valorising the wastes coming from the leather industry, olive oil industry, pulp and paper, winery, textile, and food industries, as well as aquaculture. A section on biorefinery for hydrocarbons and emerging contaminants is included to cover concepts on biodesulfurization of petroleum wastes, leaching of heavy metals from E – waste, and bioelectrochemical processes for CO2. Chapters on algal biorefinery are also included to focus on the technologies for conversion of CO2 sequestration and wastewater utilization. Biovalorisation of Wastes to Renewable Chemicals and Biofuels can be used as course material for graduate students in chemical engineering, chemistry, and biotechnology, and as a reference for industrial professionals and researchers who want to gain a basic understanding on the subject. - Covers a wide range of topics, from the conversion of wastes to organic acids, biofuels, biopolymers and industrially relevant products - Bridges the gap between academics and industry - Written in a lucid and self-explanatory style - Includes activities/quiz/critical questions
