We took all possible cover by creeping though woods and behind fences until we reached the line of redoubts and breastworks facing the enemy's position. A non-combatant is strangely impressed at the quiet, nonchalant air of the men who hold important position on the line. If it were not for the sharp crack of skirmish fire in front one could almost imagine himself enjoying the delights of a summer camp, although the Napoleon and Parrot guns pointing through embrasures at intervals along the log-breast works had an air of significance, and the smoke-begrimed muzzles and mud-covered wheels and' carriages showed the severe service they had rendered. We found many of the men asleep along the line; some were playing cards, and others attending to camp duties, such as washing clothes, etc. All seemed free from any care about what might occur; that was somebody else's business. Excerpt from Camp Fire Stories: A Series of Sketches of the Union Army in the Southwest Somehow a story seems to tell what war meant, in all its phases, better than does a mere description; and what a man has seen and felt is better understood if the incidents of the seeing and feeling are graphically told by the one who did them both. So I have yielded as the boys have urged that I write these stories out as they have been told at Our Grand Army camp-fires; because, they said, we old soldiers would be soon dead, and the young folks who had grown up to take our places should. My former experience as a trooper in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry being accounted unto me for military righteousness, I sailed with my regiment from Southampton on September 3rd, 1914. We thought we were bound for France direct, and only discovered on the passage that we were to be landed, first, at Malta. Enlisted men laugh at the former because the author is remote and they cannot bruise him. Had they the power to lure the civilian into their midst they would shortly drill him full of real army coloring, and his effusions would be shrunken with lean, beautiful wisdom ever after. But, since he keeps his personality removed, the soldiers can only laugh. The literary efforts of commissioned officers are discussed in whispers by the enlisted men, because they are only enlisted men, while the commissioned officers are old and young gods, who become very masterful beings when criticised audibly by men from the ranks. But no one can deny that the army stories of commissioned officers are full of officers' instinct, and officers' fleckless uniforms, and clubs, and ladies. The enlisted men who emerge upon these idyllic pages are sort of baneful and temporary necessities, as are warts. There are orderlies with square shoulders and brick faces, whose vocabularies consist of "Yes, sir," and "No, sir," uttered in disfigured English.
