They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known. Excerpt from Soil Protection and Soil Improvement The need of complete information in one handy volume, in other words a ready reference book, covering the various phases pertaining to the Protection and Improvement of our soils, influenced the author in compiling the subject matter herewith set forth. The value of tile underdrainage in the up-building of the farm lands was considered of such vital importance that it is treated at length, showing the treatment and the results obtained in different types of soils. Then, too, since the farmer is deeply interested in all matters relating to the growing and handling of their crops, he should be great ly concerned in the proper expenditure of the public moneys for road building and in the securing for himself and his neigh bors the best possible returns for such expenditure. The proper drainage of our highways has received less attention than the drainage of the farm. The lack of it, has resulted in the destruction of all kinds of roads and an inexcusable waste of money. In fact injury resulting from lack of drain age is greater than injury from trafiic.. The demand for better roads invites a study and knowledge as to how the money expended may not be lost. No class of taxpayers is more concerned than the farmer in the building of our roads so they will last. Hence, a portion of this book is given over to the subject of the Improvement of Our Rural Highways and an urgent appeal for earnest cooperation on the part of the farmer, for only through same can our people correct the present evil and make possible better conditions of traffic and the handling of the crops. Excerpt from Soils and Their Properties The recognition of the work done by micro-organisms marks a most important advance in our knowledge of the phenomena involved in the metabolism (gr. Metabole, change) of the' soil. Hitherto, investigation has been directed rather to the determination of the immediate effects of soil metabolism in promoting the nutrition of plants. But it is at least possible that the biological fac tors in metabolic activity may eventually be proved to be not less potent than the physical and chemical agents in effecting the disintegration of rocks, and thus in restoring to the soil those mineral ingredients which are undergoing incessant loss. Our knowledge of the biology of the soil is hardly yet in a sufficiently settled condition to be made the subject of an elementary manual.
