Book Description
Excerpt from Soils, How to Handle and Improve Them Many of the early books on farming were written in a technical style. They smacked of the lecture room and the library rather than of the soil. They were scholarly rather than practical. A spirit of directness and simplicity is beginning to dominate agricultural literature. The modern type of farm books is born of actual contact with the soil and a desire to be of service to the men who are getting a living from the soil. They are democratic; they discuss common things in a plain way. The long and tedious tables of figures in the old books are giving place to crisp summaries. The technical lecture-room phrases are replaced by words in common use on farms. The idea is not to present less science - for nothing is so practical as sound science - but to present science in a simple and practical way. This new spirit is contemporaneous with the farmers' institute, the farmer's reading-course, Nature-study, elementary agriculture in the public schools and other efforts to serve the man who tills the soil. It is an expression of a general movement which aims to democracise agricultural teaching. This book is an attempt to set forth the important facts about the soil in a plain and untechnical manner. It is not a contribution to agricultural science, but an interpretation of it - a new presentation of what is already known. Book Description
Excerpt from Soil Protection and Soil Improvement The need of complete information in one handy volume, in other words a ready reference book, covering the various phases pertaining to the Protection and Improvement of our soils, influenced the author in compiling the subject matter herewith set forth. The value of tile underdrainage in the up-building of the farm lands was considered of such vital importance that it is treated at length, showing the treatment and the results obtained in different types of soils. Then, too, since the farmer is deeply interested in all matters relating to the growing and handling of their crops, he should be great ly concerned in the proper expenditure of the public moneys for road building and in the securing for himself and his neigh bors the best possible returns for such expenditure. The proper drainage of our highways has received less attention than the drainage of the farm. The lack of it, has resulted in the destruction of all kinds of roads and an inexcusable waste of money. In fact injury resulting from lack of drain age is greater than injury from trafiic.. The demand for better roads invites a study and knowledge as to how the money expended may not be lost. No class of taxpayers is more concerned than the farmer in the building of our roads so they will last. Hence, a portion of this book is given over to the subject of the Improvement of Our Rural Highways and an urgent appeal for earnest cooperation on the part of the farmer, for only through same can our people correct the present evil and make possible better conditions of traffic and the handling of the crops. Book Description
Excerpt from Soils and Their Properties The recognition of the work done by micro-organisms marks a most important advance in our knowledge of the phenomena involved in the metabolism (gr. Metabole, change) of the' soil. Hitherto, investigation has been directed rather to the determination of the immediate effects of soil metabolism in promoting the nutrition of plants. But it is at least possible that the biological fac tors in metabolic activity may eventually be proved to be not less potent than the physical and chemical agents in effecting the disintegration of rocks, and thus in restoring to the soil those mineral ingredients which are undergoing incessant loss. Our knowledge of the biology of the soil is hardly yet in a sufficiently settled condition to be made the subject of an elementary manual. All that is attempted, there fore, In 'the following pages is to trace soils back to their parent rocks, to indicate some of their more important physical and chemical properties, and to give a brief account of the distribution of soils within the British Isles. It is proposed to follow this Volume with another, in the same series, upon the practical management of the soil. Book Description
Excerpt from The Organic Constituents of Soils The soil is not simple, but complex. The soil properties and functions are likewise complex, not simple. All of the investigators preceding me in this symposium have emphasized to you by their papers how complex the subject is and how much remains to be done before a clear insight is Obtained, but they have also shown to you clearly that a well-trained army of scientists is at work on the prob lems connected with soil fertility, applying. Thereto all the principles of modern science. The Old view was simplicity itself; the soil was a mere trough in which the plant found its nourishment. But I can do no better than to let Liebig speak for himself. I quote from Letter XII of his Familiar Letters on Chemistry A field in which we cultivate the same plant for several successive years becomes barren for that plant in a period varying with the nature of the soil; in one field it will be three, in another seven, in a third twenty, in a fourth a hundred years. One field bears wheat and no peas; another beans and turnips but no tobacco; a third gives a plentiful crop of turnips but will not bear clover. What is the reason that a field loses its fertility for one plant, the same which at first flourished there? What is the reason one kind of plant succeeds in a field where another fails? Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Soil Management In 1895 the preface was written for the Rural Science Series. It set forth the purpose of the Series to be the desire to place in readable form the best results of scientific thought and discovery relating to agriculture and country life, in order that the general public might be made aware of the progress, and that farmers might be led more effectively to apply the information in their daily work. It was the hope that the Series, under the present writer's direction or another's, might gradually extend itself to the whole range of agricultural scientific literature. The books now included in The Rural Science Series are about two dozen, making nearly two volumes, on the average, for each year. The number of writers on agricultural topics is increasing, the knowledge on all subjects is rapidly accumulating, and the reading-public is gradually enlarging; there is every reason to expect, therefore, that the Series will extend itself still more rapidly in the years to come. It was considered to be an auspicious circumstance that the Rural Science Series began with a book on the soil, for this grounded the enterprise. Book Description
Excerpt from Wayne County Soils T IS A matter of common observation that soils vary tremendously in their productive power, depending upon their physical condition, their chemical composition, and their biological activities. For any com prehensive plan of soil improvement looking toward the permanent mainte nance of our agricultural lands, a definite knowledge of the various existing kinds or types of soil is a first essential. It is the purpose of a soil survey to classify the various kinds of soil of a given area in such a manner as to permit definite characterization for description and for mapping. With the information that such a survey affords, every farmer or landowner of the surveyed area has at hand the basis for a rational system of improve ment of his land. At the same time the Experiment Station is furnished an inventory of the soils of the state, upon which intelligently to base plans for those fundamental investigations so necessary for solving the problems of practical soil improvement.
