Book Description
A new analytical method for the determination of ele- ments in filtered aqueous matrices using inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) has been implemented at the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Labo- ratory that uses collision/reaction cell technology to reduce molecular ion interferences. The updated method can be used to determine elements in filtered natural-water and other filtered aqueous matrices, including whole-water, biota, sediment, and soil digestates. Helium or hydrogen is used as the collision or reaction gas, respectively, to eliminate or substantially reduce interferences commonly resulting from sample-matrix composition. Helium is used for molecular ion interferences associated with the determination of As, Co, Cr, Cu, K, Mg, Na, Ni, V, W and Zn, whereas hydrogen is used for Ca, Fe, Se, and Si. Other elements that are not affected by molecular ion interference also can be determined simply by not introducing a collision/reaction gas into the cell. Analy- sis time is increased by about a factor of 2 over the previous method because of the additional data acquisition time in the hydrogen and helium modes.

Book Description
Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are a group of 16 related elements with low concentrations in air particulate matter, soil and water. An analytical technique was devised capable of measuring simultaneously all 16 REEs at very low levels and a great speed in environmental matrices. REEs were analysed in river sediments, soil and air in The Netherlands and China. In air particulate matter, the variation of REE concentration depended on the wind direction and could be correlated with the emission type (petrochemical industry, traffic, background). Chinese river sediments showed strong enrichment in Gd. High crust-normalised ratios were observed for Ce and Dy in Guangdong soils. Dutch soil from particular site was enriched in Gd, Nd, Dy and Ce, as well as in heavy metals. In leaching tests, less than 0,8% of the total REE content of the soil was released which was much lower than for heavy metals. REE are generally poorly soluble in the environment and remain adsorbed to soils.

Book Description
Laser Ablation attached to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is widely accepted as a rapid and sensitive technique for trace element analysis of solid materials. Three different instruments are used: 1- a-The double focusing ICP-MS (JMS-PLASMAX2) is used for the analysis of rare earth elements in minerals as (monazite), and for rocks as (standard samples BCR-2, AGV-2), Also lead and strontium isotope ratios in tourmaline sample solution. b- A quadrupole (ELAN6000, Perkin Elmer) mass spectrometer. It was applied for the analysis of single grains of tourmaline sample for Sr and Pb isotope ratios and fused pellets for trace elements composition for different samples 2- Energy dispersive Scanning Electron microscope used for the analysis of zircon fused pellets and single grains. Rutherford back scattering spectrometer for the analysis of zircon fused pellets to ensure the homogeneity of the fused pellets, and LA-HR-ICP-MS (PLASMAX2) for trace elements in zircon fused pellets. 3- Ion exchange and ion chromatograph GBC for the separation of transition and rare earth elements in geological samples.
