Book Description
Excerpt from Sociology: Rules, Roles, and Relationships But since no social system is a closed affair, since there are strains within and stress without, we m0ve on to a discussion of changes in systems of social relationship (part III). While I pay some attention to planned social change, it seemed better to emphasize the implica tions for change lying latent in behavior patterns whose manifest functions are poles apart from their unintended consequences. A useful vantage point for assessing degree and sources Of change is the rural-urban axis. It provides not merely a contrast in space, but also a dramatic transformation through time in American society. Paralleling this shift there are basic changes in the nature of the social order. The evidence clearly suggests that there are markedly different requirements for maintaining a system of relationships in primary and secondary, rural and urban, simple and complex groups. Finally, in the epilogue, I indulge my prejudices by discussing the significance of the sociologist's role in our world, and the resist auces he encounters in the pursuit of reliable knowledge about man's behavior among men. In a new preface to this expanded edition, Billson maintains that it is still vitally Important to understand the coping styles that young black males develop in the face of adversity.Bernard E. Bruce traces what happened to the five boys, who are now men In their forties, in his poignant epilogue, "From Boys to Men." A new chapter on Intervention strategies shows how parents, teachers, and others who work with inner-city youth can most effectively support positive coping styles. Graphic representations help visualize both the styles and the intervention strategies. This classic book is a valued resource for parents; for those who work in the helping professions, education, and the criminal justice system; and for students of sociological theory, social psychology, human development, and race relations.

Book Description
Drawing on field research in Malta, Sicily and among Italian emigrants in Canada, this book explores the social influence of the Mediterranean climate and the legacy of ethnic and religious conflict from the past five decades. Case studies illustrate the complexity of daily life not only in the region but also in more remote academe, by analysing the effects of fierce family loyalty, emigration and the social consequences of factionalism, patronage and the friends-of-friends networks that are widespread in the region. Several chapters discuss the social and environmental impact of mass tourism, how locals cope, and the paradoxical increase in religious pageantry and public celebrations. The discussions echo changes in the region and the related development of the author’s own interests and engagement with prevailing issues through his career.
