Book Description
This packet of lessons focuses on the transition from a legacy of central planning to a market orientation in the economic systems of Central and Eastern Europe, the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union, and China. These lessons seek to provide high school teachers with a well-informed approach to teaching about this transition. The lessons emphasize the complex texture of events and the regional distinctions found among the transition economies. The materials also highlight findings about certain conditions that seem crucial to economic reform and introduce economic concepts that teachers and students can use to describe and explain the successes and the failures of economic change. The ten lessons include: (1) "The Legacy of Soviet Communism"; (2) "Different Paths to Reform: Case Studies of Poland, China, and Russia"; (3) "Political and Economic Freedoms"; (4) "How To Privatize?"; (5) "Monopoly Is Not Just a Game"; (6) "Why Trade?"; (7) "Why Middlemen Matter: The Role of Financial Institutions in a Market Economy"; (8) "Resisting the Siren Song of Inflation"; (9) "Brother, Can You Spare a Ruble?"; and (10) "Distribution of Income: Different Ways to Slice the Pie." The appendix contains selected world development indicators for the regions under study. (EH)

Book Description
This work is organized in seven sections around major themes of socio-economics. The first section outlines socio-economics in an historical perspective, drawing on the "Methodenstreit" in the German school of economics at the turn of the century. Four additional essays view economic behaviour from the perspective of psychology, sociology and values outside the realm of economics. The second section of the book explores the process of choice and goals made by the variety of economic factors, among them factors that influence choices, values and motivations outside economics. The next two sections, each containing three papers, examine executive leadership and entrepreneurship from the broader socio-economic perspective. Section five includes papers that deal with the role of institutions in the modern political economy. It develops an institutional theory of markets, firms, human values in economic behaviour and investment in ethnic goals and morality. Section six focuses on the modern corporate culture considering collective human capital. The final three papers examine the boundaries that embrace the processes and activities of firms. They consider the bonds and relationships that develop between firms and organizations in the modern political economy.

Book Description
Education programs in social entrepreneurship helps to create and fill jobs devoted to developing the local economy, which has become a dual transfer strategy by which a virtuous circle occurs between a retrofitted educational system based on social entrepreneurship, and vocational students who are highly entrepreneurial. The Handbook of Research on Social Entrepreneurship and Solidarity Economics focuses on practical experience and theoretical models for popularizing the concept of social entrepreneurship as a critical element of economic growth. Emphasizing the ways in which social entrepreneurship benefits developing regions, small and medium enterprises, and low-income communities, this handbook of research is a pivotal reference source for professionals, academics, and graduate-level students in the fields of economics, business administration, sociology, education, politics, and international relations.

Book Description
At 15.4 percent of the population, Latinos are the largest minority group in the United States. They are a growing presence in all sectors of the economy, play an increasingly important role in government and politics, and are influential across a wide range of cultural domains. Despite the growing attention paid to Latinos in recent years, this population is characterized by relatively low socio-economic status, and Latinos frequently rank behind the majority white population and other minority groups when it comes to education, finances, and employment. This book contributes to the understanding of these issues by addressing a comprehensive range of topics on Latino economic incorporation, outcomes, and impact over an individual's lifetime. The volume starts with the foundational issue of education, and then moves to immigrant integration and adjustment, Latino and immigrant earnings, the economic impact of Latinos, and inter-generational incorporation and long-term integration issues. The contributions provide wide-ranging perspectives on the key factors that determine whether Latinos will be able to achieve their economic potential. The substantial individual, national, and international implications of these studies make this book of interest to scholars and policy-makers alike, particularly those concerned with the issues of education, immigration, employment, and earnings. The rapid and continuing growth of the Hispanic population ensures that the debate over social policy in the next few decades will increasingly focus on how best to alleviate the economic and social problems facing this population and perhaps encourage rapid assimilation. The studies in the volume edited by David Leal and Stephen Trejo provide an excellent foundation for this discussion. The conceptual issues and findings in these papers are sure to be valuable to both policy makers and researchers. George Borjas, Robert W. Scrivner Professor of Economics and Social Policy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University Latinos and the Economy provides a truly authoritative but accessible compilation of first-rate scholarship on Hispanic incorporation, educational and political gains, and ongoing economic and cultural impacts. It is "must reading" for anyone concerned about the future, especially as America moves inexorably towards becoming a majority-minority society by mid-century. Daniel T. Lichter, Ferris Family Professor, Department of Policy Analysis and Management, Cornell University This is the volume to read for anyone interested in current American immigration issues or the role of Hispanics in the U.S. economy." Daniel S. Hamermesh, Killam Professor of Economics, University of Texas at Austin "The future of America is closely intertwined with the successful integration--economically, politically, and socially--of the Latino population. Latinos now comprise one of every seven workers and almost one of every five students in the United States. The research reported in this volume describes the challenges faced by Latinos in schools, the labor market, and in communities and explains their prospects for upward mobility. These studies suggest that a significant investment in expanding educational opportunities may be the single most important policy lever to incorporate Latinos into the American mainstream." Charles Hirschman, Professor of Public Affairs and Boeing International Professor of Sociology, University of Washington

Book Description
There has perhaps never been a less propitious moment to present an introductory but comprehensive book on development studies, education and challenges than the present time. The world is awash with financial crises, conflict based socio economic cum political upheavals, poverty driven suffering and abject social inequalities. Increasingly, education is experiencing the intrusion of socio economic market philosophy. Hence, education is obliged to forge closer links with industry, commerce, and the world of work. So it is imperative that a student of social science acquire a working knowledge of the socio economic frameworks from which social, economic and educational challenges emerge. The book is written from a firm conviction that economics and the world of business are of immense value to improving the lives of individuals, groups and nations. Towards these ends, the book provides a general background to the elements, theories and characteristics of socio economic growth and development. By surveying the social structures, their formations, their principal activities and problems, the book gives the student, and reader, a broad spectrum of the nature of the development world and the role of education in socio economic growth. Further, the concern of the book is with attempting to answer the fundamental questions of what, why, who and how of socio economic growth, development and education. It is full of penetrating analyses of development issues at local, regional and international levels. It is intended to be compulsory reading for students of socio economics, business management, entrepreneurship, development and education. Above all, it should be an essential tool, and constant companion, for those interested in investment issues and strategies. Armed with the knowledge, and skills, inherent in this book, the sky is the limit for those intending to get immersed in the field of socio economic growth and development. It acts as a spring board for budding entrepreneurs. I have endeavoured to work on a natural free flow, and continuity in the development of topics. Included in the book are relevant topics on figures and statistics in socio economic growth, development and education. There is a relevant section on information, technology and communication as they relate to development studies. All these are relevant and topical to the student, and reader. Included at the end is a comprehensive, instructing and elaborate glossary of terms used, and implied, in the book. The glossary, in itself, is intended to act as a quick reference teaching and learning unit. The whole idea is to give a firm, substantive base for the student, and reader, as well as a balanced, integrated picture of development studies, socio economics, entrepreneurship and education. Last but very important is the need to acknowledge the help, sources and encouragement from many people. No book is written in isolation, so I have benefited from contact, comments and discussions with a number of our students, colleagues and successful development practitioners. The temptation here would be to mention them by name, but the list would fill another volume. It suffices to say that I owe them my greatest debt. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, I bear the burden of any shortcomings, errors and omissions that remain.
