Book Description
Excerpt from Society in America, Vol. 2 of 2 Even In the south, where, the element of wages being lost, and the will of the labourer being lost with them, there are no adequate means of execut ing even the best-conceived enterprisesfi' more has been done than could have been expected under the circumstances. The mail roads are still ex tremely bad. I found, in travelling through the Carolinas and Georgia, that the drivers consider themselves entitled to get on by any means they can devise. That nobody helps and nobody hinders them. It was constantly happening that the stage came to a step on the brink of a wide and a deep puddle, extending all across the road. The driver helped himself, without scruple, to as many rails of the nearest fence as might serve to fill up the bot tom Of the hole, or break our descent into it. On Inquiry, I found it was not probable that either road or fence would be mended till both had gone to absolute destruction. Book Description
Excerpt from Society in America, Vol. 1 of 2 In working according to this method, my princi pal dangers are two. I am in danger of not fully apprehending the principles on which society in the United States is founded; and of erring in the application to these of the facts which came under my notlce. In the last respect, I am utterly hope less of my own accuracy. It is in the highest de gree improbable that my scanty gleanings in the wide field of American society should present a precisely fair sample of the whole. I can only explain that I have spared no pains to discover the truth, in both divisions of my task; and invite cor rection, in all errors of fact. This I earnestly do; holding myself, of course, an equal judge with others on matters of Opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Considered to be one of the founding fathers of America, Franklin was also a leading author, a politician, a political theorist, a printer, an inventor, a scientist, a statesman, and a diplomat. Perhaps one of the most famous Americans, known around the world, Franklin's life story in his own words makes for an interesting read for any individual intrigued by this man or the humble beginnings of America. The second volume in his two volume set begins half-way through Franklin's life, at the point when the Wilkes Riots were occurring (1768) and Franklin was named President of the American Philosophical society. The rest of the volume continues through pivotal events to the end of Franklin's exciting and informative life. The events discussed are both those that Franklin experiences personally (such as his sixty-seventh birthday) and world events upon which Franklin feels qualified to offer his educated opinion. Each of the topics explored give the reader a glimpse into both Franklin's life and also the world stage that would lead to the American Revolution and the birth of a nation. Book Description
Excerpt from Publications of the Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames of America, 1906, Vol. 2 As it appears to me to be a duty which the living owe to each other as well as to the dead, to rescue merit from descending into oblivion, I have endeavored to trace the following notices of a Lady, who tho well known gen erally esteemed by the most eminent characters in this state whilst she lived, yet nothing I believe, respecting her has ever appeared in Print. What I now mean to offer is from recollection alone, but my opportunities for information were such as to enable me to give those recollections with certainty.
