The primary objective of this book is to offer practical means for strengthening the economics and policy dimension of the agroforestry discipline. This book, written by the leading experts in economics and agroforestry, encompasses case studies from Australia, China, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Mexico, Micronesia, Tanzania, United Kingdom, United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The applied economic methodologies encompass a wide variety of case studies including enterprise/farm budget models through Faustmann models, Policy Analysis Matrix, production function approach, risk assessment models, dynamic programming, linear programming, meta-modeling, contingent valuation, attribute-based choice experiments, econometric modeling, and institutional economic analysis. It is our belief that these methodologies help agroforestry students and professionals conduct rigorous assessment of economic and policy aspects of agroforestry systems and to produce less biased and more credible information. Agroforestry (AF) is a dynamic, ecologically based, natural resources management system that, by integrating trees on farms, ranches, and in other landscapes, diversifies and increases production and promotes social, economic, and environmental benefits for land users. Further, it is receiving increasing attention as a sustainable land-management option worldwide because of its ecological, economic, and social attributes. Advances have been achieved by building on past research accomplishments and expanding AF’s stakeholder base, which now includes private/public partnerships, communities, ecologists, farmers, indigenous peoples, and policymakers in both temperate and tropical countries. AF has now been recognized as a valuable problem-solving approach to ensuring food security and rebuilding resilient rural environments. Recent studies have shown that more than 1 billion hectares of agricultural land have more than 10% tree cover. Of this area, 160 million hectares have more than 50% tree cover. Agricultural ecosystems can be further improved through AF to achieve environmental restoration, greater farm productivity, and key ecological services, including climate change mitigation and adaptation for improved rural livelihood. In fact, it is largely considered synonymous with climate smart agriculture and a remedy for many modern environmental challenges. Consequently, AF’s knowledge base is being expanded at a rapid rate, as illustrated by the increasing number and quality of scientific publications on various forms and different aspects of AF. This book offers state-of-the-art information on the fundamental concepts and history of AF and its evolution as a science, presenting a wealth of advanced research results and evaluations relating to different aspects of AF. Accordingly, it will be useful for a broad readership, including students, foresters, farmers, local communities, indigenous peoples, civil society institutions, media, policymakers and the general public.

Agroforestry has come of age during the past three decades. The age-old practice of growing trees and crops and sometimes animals in interacting combinations – that has been ignored in the single-commodity-oriented agricultural and forestry development paradigms – has been brought into the realm of modern land-use. Today agroforestry is well on its way to becoming a specialized science at a level similar to those of crop science and forestry science. To most land-use experts, however, agroforestry has a tropical connotation. They consider agroforestry as something that can and can only be identified with the tropics. That is a wrong perception. While it is true that the tropics, compared to the temperate regions, have a wider array of agroforestry systems and hold greater promise for potential agroforestry interventions, it is also true that agroforestry has several opportunities in the temperate regions too. Indeed, the role of agroforestry is now recognized in Europe as exemplified by this book, North America, and elsewhere in the temperate zone. Current interest in ecosystem management in industrialized countries strongly suggests that there is a need to embrace and apply agroforestry principles to help mitigate the environmental problems caused or exacerbated by commercial agricultural and forestry production enterprises.

Agroforestry here can be regarded as an alternative to enhance production while keeping the ecological and biological balance, following the failure of the “green revolution”. This book attempts to systematically and intensively study agroforestry, especially talun-huma, a combination of slash-and-burn agriculture and productive fallow in a village in Cianjur district, West Java, Indonesia, mainly from the socioeconomic perspective. Its methodology takes the holistic approach and is farmer-centered. The research started in 1998, just a few months after President Soeharto stepped down, ushering in the era of reform and democratization, and lasted until 2007. Agroforestry and rural economy faced with crises such as Asian Monetary Crisis in 1997, agrarian conflicts following Soeharto’s exit, and the decrease in land fertility because of the sharp increase in a particular crop—in this case, banana leaf—in traditional agroforestry. Analysis of the sustainability and crisis in agroforestry are demonstrated both quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as institutionally, in this book. This book demonstrates that the agroforestry—or the economy of an agroforestry village—sustained the economy between 1998 and 2007, helping keep it from going into a standstill when the Indonesian economy was in a slump. It also analyzes the impact of institutional changes, such as liberalization of rice import/export and cooperatives, as well as the reform of the village administration on the socioeconomy, especially agroforestry, in the village. It also examines the agrarian conflicts at the research site, especially the looting of teak in the national forest, as well as micro credit, gender relations, and public works, which are all central to a study of agroforestry’s development. The flexibility of the talun-huma and related agroforestry that can accommodate a great variety of plants, and the fertile soil resulting from a multilayered and often dense canopy of vegetation that protects against soil erosion and leaching have enabled people to plant large numbers of banana-leaf, which considerably boosted the villagers’ earnings. The sharp increase in banana-leaf production since the end of 1990s, however, resulted in the decline of soil fertility—analyzed in this book, which also proposes solutions.
