Book Description
People with disabilities are among the most disadvantaged groups in the EU. This policy brief examines the social situation of people of working age with disabilities, using data from the 2011 and 2016 rounds of the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS). The brief looks at changes over this period in employment, education and training, participation in society, social protection and healthcare, all priority areas of the European Disability Strategy. The brief also looks at the subjective well-being of this group of Europeans and examines the factors that influence their well-being. Among its policy pointers, the brief highlights the work that must be done to improve the employment situation of people with disabilities.

Book Description
Nearly three decades after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), people with disabilities continue to be significantly underrepresented in the American Labor force. This loss of talent to U.S. organizations and restriction of opportunities for millions of workers have broader implications for civil society. People denied access to the workforce are limited in their ability to contribute to the economy and to their communities, heightening their reliance on public support systems and reducing the number of people participating in community life. This LERA volume focuses on the employment of individuals with disabilities. Its purpose is to review the current employment situation for Americans with disabilities, place it in the context of the U.S. regulatory system, describe current issues, identify ways that employers are approaching possible remediation of these issues, and identify emerging concerns and opportunities. A multi-disciplinary team of researchers and practitioners provide a broad-based overview of related issues, approaches, and opportunities. This volume will be useful to a wide array of professionals, including labor and employment relations attorneys and specialists; human resource, diversity and inclusion, and equal employment opportunity professionals; as well as organizational leaders, managers, and supervisors who are seeking to improve employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities both here and abroad.

Book Description
Employment is one of the most important aspects of the lives of the persons with or without disabilities. At this contemporary age, the work is not only a basic source of income for most families; it is also a form of social connection and status in the community. It is the most effective way to improve the well-being of the individuals, their families and communities. Work provides not only economic satisfaction but it also gives the sense of identity, accomplishment and meaning to a person. It is central to individual identity, social roles and social status. Employment and socioeconomic status are the main drivers of social gradients in physical health, mental health and mortality. Conversely, joblessness is harmful to physical and mental health . Employment can be a significant source of affiliation especially among people with disabilities. According to Schur employment helps people overcome the social isolation that often accompanies disability as well as lead to the development of civic skills that facilitate participation in a variety of community and political activities outside the workplace. It also has a significant impact in escalating the perception that people with disabilities receive equal respect and has equal influence in the political system, reflecting their greater sense of inclusion in mainstream society. Unemployment is associated with poor mental health and well-being. Disability status has a significant predictive effect on an inability to work. Thus, it's a vicious cycle of health, work and well being. Studies reflect that the attainment of education and participation in economic activity are extremely important for the empowerment of disabled population. Also, to overcome the exclusion, people with disabilities and their households must have access to and participation in market work or livelihoods and should break some of the circular links between disability and poverty . Moreover, for all persons in working age, employment is a key element towards combating poverty and to achieve social inclusion and participation in society. This applies equally to persons with disabilities. The people with disability should be encouraged and supported to work which not only will enhance their health & well-being it will also improve quality of life that contributes to life satisfaction for persons with disabilities.

Book Description
With several empirical evidences, this book advocates on the importance of human capital of persons with disabilities and demands the paradigm shift from charity into investment approach. Society in general believes that people with disabilities cannot benefit from education, cannot participate in the labour market and cannot be contributing members to families and countries. To invalidate such assumptions, this book describes how education in particular helps make persons with disabilities achieve economic independence and social inclusion. For the first time, detailed analyses of returns to the investment in education and nexus between disability, education, employability and occupational options are discussed. Moreover, other chapters describe disability and poverty followed by the discussion of barriers behind why persons with disabilities are unable to obtain education despite the significantly higher returns. These foundational themes recur throughout the book.
