The Gangs of Birmingham
Author: Philip Gooderson
Publisher: Milo Books Ltd
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 368
Book Description
In the early 1870s, the boomtown of Birmingham erupted in a series of vicious gang wars. Mobs of youths armed with stones, knives and belt buckles fought pitched battles in a struggle for territorial supremacy. Known as "sloggers", they drew their numbers from the workshops and factories that made guns, nails and jewellery, and lived cheek-by-jowl in overcrowded, insanitary slums. Author Philip Gooderson traces the history of these warring factions from their first appearance in the Cheapside area to the later rise of the "peaky blinders", new gangs named for their peaked caps and long fringes. He describes for the first time the brutal antics of once-infamous fighters such as the Simpson and Harper brothers and the police killer George "Cloggy" Williams, and explains the eventual demise of the gangs at the turn of the century. The Gangs of Birmingham brings to vivid life a forgotten chapter in the history of British gangland.

Blacks and Britannity
Author: Danièle Joly
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000160327
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 122
Book Description
This title was first published in 2001: Featuring original research concerning young African-Caribbeans in Birmingham, this book addresses complex issues of urban violence and insecurity, racism and discrimination, alienation, resistance and social networks. Employing the methodology of sociological intervention developed by Alain Touraine, the book explores the experiences of a group of young people who are simultaneously presumed to be victims and perpetrators of violence. It examines their relationship to this violence, its meanings for and effects upon them, how they constitute themselves as social actors and subjects, and their capacity for action. The book also addresses the fact that ethnic monitoring and multicultural policies place the question of ethnicity on the British social and political agenda alongside issues of racism and discrimination. Exploring both the perceived and personally experienced position of young people within this context, it sheds important new light upon processes of group identification and action.

Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 170
Book Description
A vibrant, expanding, multi-racial district called Sparkbrook in Birmingham is where Martin Joseph McEvilly was born in 1951. As a member of a large, post-war Irish family, he learnt how to navigate through the busy streets filled with waves of immigration. Skill shortages inviting inhabitants from across Europe and the furthest reaches of the Commonwealth nurtured an environment of hardiness, endless humour and adventure for a young boy.Martin chronicles short stories with honest Irish humour together with the perils and adventure that comes with boyish naivety. Early hardship would lead to opportunity and togetherness for Sparkbrook locals. Vibrant family life is depicted here with his mother and father holding the household together to give them a better start in the world. Fights with 'Tinkers' and the fraught Police were plenty and the daily toil of Irish immigrants working or drinking on their well-earned Sundays off. Unforgiving Catholic school teachers with no time for young 'eejits' and hours working in convenience stores selling Irish goods to its varied customers. Summers spent on the family farm in Ireland provided a stark contrast to the terraced houses of the smog-filled inner cities. Working in the 'Bog' and helping with the calving to climbing Croagh Patrick and living with Grandma give an insight to rural County Mayo. Further stories in-between about encounters with Beatles, Dusty Springfield, Ozzy Osbourne, Murder, Muggings, Prince the dog and then finally the big move out of the area all make for a hilarious and heart-warming insight to the times.
