Book Description
#1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Book Description
Before invasion, Turtle Island-or North America-was home to vibrant cultures that shared long-standing philosophical precepts. The most important and wide-spread of these was the view of reality as a collaborative binary known as the Twinned Cosmos of Blood and Breath. This binary system was built on the belief that neither half of the cosmos can exist without its twin. Both halves are, therefore, necessary and good. Western anthropologists typically shorthand the Twinned Cosmos as "Sky and Earth" but this erroneously saddles it with Christian baggage and, worse, imposes a hierarchy that puts sky quite literally above earth. None of this Western ideology legitimately applies to traditional Indigenous American thought, which is about equal cooperation and the continual recreation of reality. Spirits of Blood, Spirits of Breath examines traditional historical concepts of spirituality among North American Indians both at and, to the extent it can be determined, before contact. In doing so, Barbara Alice Mann rescues the authentically indigenous ideas from Western, and especially missionary, interpretations. In addition to early European source material, she uses Indian oral traditions, traced as much as possible to their earliest versions and sources, and Indian records, including pictographs, petroglyphs, bark books, and wampum. Moreover, Mann respects each Indigenous culture as a discrete unit, rather than generalizing them as is often done in Western anthropology. To this end, she collates material in accordance with actual historical, linguistic, and traditional linkages among the groups at hand, with traditions clearly identified by group and, where recorded, by speaker. In this way she provides specialists and non-specialists alike a window into the purportedly lost, and often caricatured, world of Indigenous American thought.

Book Description
For more than two decades, psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman has been scouting the leading edge of the human sciences for what's new, surprising, and important. In Focus, he delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long overdue discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset that matters enormously for how we navigate life. Goleman boils down attention research into a three parts: inner, other, and outer focus. Goleman shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, as demonstrated by rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business. Those who excel rely on what Goleman calls Smart Practices such as mindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental 'prosthetics' that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain excellence. Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus reveals what distinguishes experts from amateurs and stars from average performers.

Book Description
THE #1 CONTROVERSIAL BESTSELLER ON HOW TO FALL ASLEEP "There's a reason you can't fall asleep-you're doing it wrong." Grab this book and finally, blissfully fall asleep... Over the last two decades a new type of disorder has emerged, one that is almost essentially in this modern society. Ripped out of their natural habitat and penetrated into the working hours of 21st century life, it's no wonder we're not sleeping. We're doing it wrong. In How to Fall Asleep in 30 Seconds, bestselling author and #1 personal development blogger in the world Steve Pavlina tells the story of the massive cultural upheaval that produced this sleep deprived epidemic, and shares controversial techniques and tactics on how to fall asleep and stay asleep. Stop and think: Realize that if it takes you fifteen minutes on average to fall asleep each night, that's more than 91 hours per year that you're wasting. This is the equivalent of spending more than two entire forty-hour workweeks just lying in bed waiting to fall asleep. And if you have insomniac tendencies and take more than an hour to fall asleep each night, you're spending more than nine 40-hour weeks on that pointless activity - every year. That's a tremendous amount of wasted time. If you'd like to change this situation, keep reading. I'll explain the details and share a process for training your brain to fall asleep almost instantly when you're ready to go to bed. Ask yourself - Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep?- Are you waking in the middle of the night?- Are you tossing and turning for hours only to drop off just before your alarm goes off?- Do you find yourself hitting the snooze button, until the very last minute, only to have to dash out the door, so you're not late?- Are you irritable after a poor night's sleep?- Do you feel exhausted the next day or have trouble concentrating and being productive?- Is your lack of good sleep becoming worrisome? In this book, you'll learn: - how to fall asleep in less than 30 seconds- how to become an early riser- how to get up right away when your alarm clock rings- how to give up coffee for the best sleep of your life What are you waiting for?
