Book Description
Excerpt from Williams Sketches We are painfully aware of its imma turity, and are probably as much alive to its literary shortcomings as our most se vere critics. But we Shall be quite satis fied if those who read these stories find in them something which may serve to recall the half-forgotten memory of their life at Williams; that, supplementing our deficiencies by their own experience, they may look back with pleasure on the college that we all know and love. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Williams College For the first two third of the forty years and six months which comprise the lifetime of Colonel Ephraim Williams, founder of the college, biographic materials are few and meagre. The vital records of his native town, the will of his grandfather, and an unsigned "Sketch" in the eighth volume of the "Collections" of the Massachusetts Historical Society seem to be the only available sources of information. It appears that April I, 1713, Ephraim Williams, Senior, of Newton, married Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham Jackson, a substantial and reputable townsman, and that their eldest son, Ephraim, Junior, was born March 7, 1715, or, by old style, February 24, 1714.On the 12th of April, 1718, and a few days after the birth of a second son, Thomas, Elizabeth Williams died, and her two children were practically adopted by their grandfather. Excerpt from Williams College and Foreign Missions: Biographical Sketches of Williams College Men, Who Have Rendered Special Service, to the of Foreign Missions The completion of 100 years since Gordon Hall be gan his work ln India makes the present a fitting time in which to commemorate the lives of the heroic men who have done so much to introduce Christian civiliza tion into heathen lands and have given to Williams College its chiefest distinction. It is hoped that, for a further perpetuation of their memory, a bronze tablet bearing their names may some day be placed in one of the halls of the College. Book Description
Excerpt from Sketch of the Late Rev. Ebenezer Fitch, D. D: First President of Williams College A brief memoir of President Fitch appeared in the "American Quarterly Register," in 1843. This volume is an amplification of that article; and its enlargement and republication, at this time, are mainly owing to a suggestion and to the liberality of Dr. Samuel Sheldon Fitch. Acceptable aid and encouragement in bringing out this work have likewise been received from two of the author's valued classmates, - David Dudley Field and Josiah William Wheeler. Whatever of distrust or hesitation might otherwise be felt about giving to the public the results of his additional labor and research is precluded by the many testimonials of approbation received on the appearance of the original article; of which none is more decisive or more highly valued by the author than the following, which he ventures to insert: - Boston, May 4, 1844. My Dear Sir: - I have received and have perused with great satisfaction your interesting tribute to President Fitch. Accept my thanks for your kindness, in remembering me on this occasion. It is but an act of justice from the living to keep legible the inscriptions on the monuments of the departed worthies; and in this case yon have left nothing to be desired. Book Description
Excerpt from A Williams Anthology: A Collection of the Verse and Prose of Williams College, 1798-1910 The purpose of the editors was to collect material which might be adjudged to possess real literary merit; but in some cases in which the historical interest attaching to the production, either by reason of its subject or by reason of the fame attained in later years by its author, is obvious, this rule has been waived. Among such exceptions may be cited that of the Resolutions addressed to President Adams by the students, and copied herein from the pages of the Vidette. The matter has been arranged in the order of class seniority, with two exceptions. It has seemed fitting to the editors to begin the work with that immortal song, The Mountains; the second exception is that of the series of biographical sketches entitled Nine Williams Alumni, which for obvious reasons were published as a whole.
