Book Description
Excerpt from Sketches of the Life of the Very Rev. Felix De Andreis: First Superior of the Congregation of the Mission in the United States and Vicar-General of the Diocese of New Orleans; With a Sketch of the Progress of the Catholic Religion in the United States, From the Beginning of the Present Century to the Year 1860 The late venerable Bishop Rosati, first Bishop of St. Louis, a disciple, friend and fellow-laborer of the Very Reverend Felix De Andreis, was the first who wrote a sketch of the life of this truly Apostolic man. Subsequently, in the year 1840, the prelate while in Rome, entrusted his manuscript to the Rev. J. B. Semeria, a distinguished Oratorian priest of Turin, who having obtained other authentic materials, through the influence of the same Bishop Rosati, and of the Very Reverend A. Durando, C. M., Visitor of the Province of Lombardy, compiled the following narrative in the Italian language. The death of the lamented Bishop was probably the cause that prevented the publication of his manuscript. Twenty years having elapsed since the compilation of this work, it became necessary to correct some of the ecclesiastical statistics; this was done without any interference with the narrative given by the reverend compiler, and the work, having been translated into English, from the Italian manuscript, is now given to the public. It is believed that there will be found much to edify the reader, in the perusal of this little volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Blurred Nationalities across the North Atlantic
Author: Luca Codignola
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487530455
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 614
Book Description
Long before the mid-nineteenth century, thousands of people were frequently moving between North America – specifically, the United States and British North America – and Leghorn, Genoa, Naples, Rome, Sicily, Piedmont, Lombardy, Venice, and Trieste. Predominantly traders, sailors, transient workers, Catholic priests, and seminarians, this group relied on the exchange of goods across the Atlantic to solidify transatlantic relations; during this period, stories about the New World passed between travellers through word of mouth and letter writing. Blurred Nationalities across the North Atlantic challenges the idea that national origin – for instance, Italianness – constitutes the only significant feature of a group’s identity, revealing instead the multifaceted personalities of the people involved in these exchanges.
