Book Description
The term "mathematics" usually suggests an array of familiar problems with solutions derived from well-known techniques. Discovering Mathematics: The Art of Investigation takes a different approach, exploring how new ideas and chance observations can be pursued, and focusing on how the process invariably leads to interesting questions that would never have otherwise arisen. With puzzles involving coins, postage stamps, and other commonplace items, students are challenged to account for the simple explanations behind perplexing mathematical phenomena. Elementary methods and solutions allow readers to concentrate on the way in which the material is explored, as well as on strategies for answers that aren't immediately obvious. The problems don't require the kind of sophistication that would put them out of reach of ordinary students, but they're sufficiently complex to capture the essential features of mathematical discovery. Complete solutions appear at the end.

Book Description
The concept of eccentricity was central to how people in the nineteenth century understood their world. This monograph is the first scholarly history of eccentricity. Carroll explores how discourses of eccentricity were established to make sense of individuals who did not seem to fit within an increasingly organized social and economic order. She focuses on the self-taught natural philosopher William Martin, the fossilist Thomas Hawkins and the taxidermist Charles Waterton.

Book Description
This richly illustrated textbook, now in its Second Edition, continues to provide a solid fundamental treatment of the essential concepts of machine drawing. The book is suitable for students pursuing courses in mechanical engineering (and its related branches) both at the undergraduate degree and diploma levels. The students are first introduced to the standards and conventions of basic engineering drawing. The machine elements such as fasteners, bearings, couplings, shafts and pulleys, pipes and pipe joints are discussed in depth before moving on to detailed drawings of components of steam engines, IC engines, boilers, and machine tools. Gears are covered in a separate chapter. Finally, the book introduces the students to the principles of computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) to prepare them to use software tools effectively for the production of computerised accurate drawings. This Second Edition includes three new chapters, namely Fits and Tolerances, Assembly Drawings, and Freehand Sketching, anda revamped chapter on Gears. Besides, all the earlier chapters have been revised and enlarged with numerous new topics and worked-out examples. Key Features Provides first and third angle projections Follows the standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards as per IS:696–1972/SP:46–1988 Contains multiple-choice questions and practice exercises

Book Description
The calculus has been one ofthe areas of mathematics with a large number of significant applications since its formal development in the seventeenth century. With the recent development of the digital computer, the range of applications of mathematics, including the calculus, has increased greatly and now includes many disciplines that were formerly thought to be non quantitative. Some of the more traditional applications have been altered, by the presence of a computer, to an extent such that many problems hitherto felt to be intractable are now solvable. This book has been written as a reaction to events that have altered the applications of the calculus. The use of the computer is made possible at an early point, although the extent to which the computer is used in the course is subject to the decision of the instructor. Some less traditional applications are included in order to provide some insight into the breadth of problems that are now susceptible to mathematical solution. The Stieltjes integral is introduced to provide for easier transition from the stated problem to its mathematical formulation, and also to permit the use of functions like step functions in later courses (such as statistics) with relative ease. The course is designed to include all the background material ordinarily associa ted with the first course in the calculus, but it is also designed with the user in mind.
