Book Description
Excerpt from Skeletons of a Course of Theological Lectures, Vol. 1 My design was at first, not to publish, but barely to print a small number of copies exclusively for the use of the students. But as it was supposed that others would desire to possess them, I have consented to their publication, reminding my readers that they are a bare skeleton of the course of Theological study here pursued. Book Description
Excerpt from Theological Sketch-Book, Vol. 1 of 3: Or Skeletons of Sermons, Carefully Arranged in Systematic Order So as to Constitute a Complete Body of Divinity It only remains to be added that the object sought to be compassed by this undertaking will require three volumes of about equal dimensions with the present one; the second is now in process of publication and expected to leave the press in a few weeks; the third Is intended In part to comprize sketches on promiscuous subjects, not essential to the integrity of the system, but selected with care and a constant reference to practical utility, and will be forthcoming in due time. With these views we commend this work to the student, the preacher, and to christians in' general. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."

Book Description
Excerpt from The Works of Leonard Woods, D.D, Vol. 1 of 5: Lately Professor of Christian Theology in the Theological Seminary, Andover While I have been employed in revising these Lectures, my thoughts have frequently been directed to that pleasant room, where I met you in successive classes, from day to day, for a long series of years, and where the most momentous of all subjects en gaged our united attention. As we proceeded in our investigations, we came to the pleasing conclusion that, although our faculties are circumscribed, we mag, within our proper limits, attain to a far more complete knowledge, than is commonly apprehended; and also, that, in examining the various doctrines of theology, we should hold fast that which is clear and certain, and leave that which is obscure and doubtful to those who delight in it. From the Lecture-room my thoughts have passed with lively emotions to the Wednesday Evening Conference, to our Chapel services on the Sabbath, to our days of fasting and prayer, and to our private intercourse. Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
