Book Description
This publication is a detailed study of the 14th - 16th century Thai ceramic wares that played a role in the local Buddhist, Brahman and Animist religious ceremonies, approached from an art historical point of view. It also establishes the degree of interaction between the many cultures that influenced the form, design, function and usage of these wares, and draws on the underlying historic, religious and stylistic linkages with India, China, Sri Lanka, Burma Cambodia and other parts of Southeast Asia. A background to the history, politics and cultural practices of Thailand introduces the subject, followed by a systematic analysis of the Thai products. Throughout the study, comparisons are made with other Asian cultures, decorative styles and chronology, all of which add further dimensions to a hitherto relatively unexplored art form. This voluminous and painstaking research was undertaken by the authors over a period of twenty years, inspired by their personal interest in the subject. The resultant major reference work on Thai ecclesiastical ceramics has had the help of many international museum curators, archaeologists, collectors and dealers. The authors have had access to practically all known major collections around the world, many of which have not been published before. Aided by over 830 photographs, maps and specially commissioned line drawings, the subject is explicitly illustrated, compiled and discussed in great detail. By drawing these different aspects together, this major study should appeal equally to collectors, researchers and those with a wider interest in the rich religious and cultural life of the area. Book Description
In commemoration of Lothar von Falkenhausens 60th birthday, this volume assembles eighteen scholarly essays that explore the intersection between art, economy, and ritual in ancient East Asia. The contributions are clustered into four themes: Ritual Economy, Ritual and Sacrifice, Technology, Community, Interaction, and Objects and Meaning, which collectively reflect the theoretical, methodological, and historical questions that Falkenhausen has been examining via his scholarship, research, and teaching throughout his career. Most of the chapters work with archaeological and textual data from China, but there are also studies of materials from Mongolia, Korea, Southeast Asia and even Egypt, showing the global impact of Falkenhausens work. The chronological range of studies extends from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age in China, into the early imperial, medieval, and early modern periods. The authors discuss art, economy, ritual, interaction, and technology in the broad context of East Asian archaeology and its connection to the world beyond.

Book Description
Since c1970, Thailand's position in the world has changed from potential communist 'domino' to one of the world's most dynamic economies. The confrontational politics of the 1970s, with the student-led revolution of 1973 and the bloody right-wing backlash In 1976, were replaced by a new consensus in the following decade, A concerted export drive sparked off a tremendous economic boom during the 1980s and early 1990s. Tourism also expanded rapidly, and is now the single largest foreign exchange earner. Economic Success has, however, been at a cost. Each year Bangkok has become more chaotic in the face of increased traffic and an Unprecedented building boom, and nationally there has been a widening gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'. Moreover, Thailand is experiencing a potential AIDS time-bomb and serious environmental degradation. Despite Such pressures, and the sudden economic crisis of mid-1997, Thailand has enjoyed an enviable record of stability in recent years.

Book Description
This reference work covers general works, ornament, folk art, arms and armour, ceramics, clocks and automata, costumes, enamels, furniture, glass, leather, metalwork, musical instruments, textiles, dolls and more. Essentially a new work rather than a revision, this annotated bibliography on the history of applied and decorative arts includes over 3000 descriptive entries on books written in western European languages. More than 1000 of these entries are new to the second edition, and approximately half are titles published since 1977. The remainder represent a significant expansion in breadth and depth of the bibliography, with the addition of nearly 500 titles of exhibition and museum catalogues and price guides.
