Beam-Helicity Asymmetries in Double-Charged-Pion Photoproduction on the Proton

Book Description
Beam-helicity asymmetries for the two-pion-photoproduction reaction gamma + p --> p pi+ pi- have been studied for the first time in the resonance region for center-of-mass energies between 1.35 GeV and 2.30 GeV. The experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer using circularly polarized tagged photons incident on an unpolarized hydrogen target. Beam-helicity-dependent angular distributions of the final-state particles were measured. The large cross-section asymmetries exhibit strong sensitivity to the kinematics and dynamics of the reaction. The data are compared with the results of various phenomenological model calculations, and show that these models currently do not provide an adequate description for the behavior of this new observable.

Asymmetry Measurements for Neutral Pion and Positive Pion Photoproduction by Linearly Polarized Gamma Rays in the Energy Range 400-900 MeV.

Book Description
The asymmetry ratio A = sigma normal - sigma parallel/sigma normal + sigma parallel has been measured using linearly polarized gamma-rays for neutral pion photoproduction. For the reaction gamma + P yields n + Positive pion, measurements were taken for theta sub cm = 135 degrees at gamma-ray energies ranging from 390 to 909 MeV. For the reaction gamma + P yields P + neutral pion, measurements were taken for theta sub cm = 60 degrees and 90 degrees at gamma-ray energies ranging from 426 to 918 MeV. (Author).

Positive Pion Production Asymmetry with Polarized Bremsstrahlung Near Second Resonance

Book Description
The azimuthal asymmetry in pion(+) photoproduction by linearly polarized bremsstrahlung was measured at photon energies from 475 to 750 MeV at 90 and 135 degrees in the center of mass system. The experimental results show that even in this energy region pion(+) are predominantly produced in the plane of the magnetic vector. This is interpreted to mean that S and P wave amplitudes are predominating over the D wave amplitude. (Author).

Charged-pion Cross Sections and Double-helicity Asymmetries in Polarized [math Display

Book Description
In this paper, we present midrapidity charged-pion invariant cross sections, the ratio of the [pi]- to [pi]+ cross sections and the charge-separated double-spin asymmetries in polarized p+p collisions at s=200 GeV. While the cross section measurements are consistent within the errors of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics predictions (pQCD), the same calculations overestimate the ratio of the charged-pion cross sections. This discrepancy arises from the cancellation of the substantial systematic errors associated with the NLO-pQCD predictions in the ratio and highlights the constraints these data will place on flavor-dependent pion fragmentation functions. Lastly, the charge-separated pion asymmetries presented here sample an x range of ~0.03-0.16 and provide unique information on the sign of the gluon-helicity distribution.
