Simplified finite element methods for finite deformation, post-buckling analysis of large space trusses and space frames are presented. Arbitrarily large rigid translations and rigid rotations of each member are accounted for. Each 3-D truss member is assumed to withstand an axial force, while each 3-D frame member is assumed to withstand two bending moments, a twisting moment, and transverse and axial forces at each node. The influence of local (member) buckling on global instability is systematically examined. For both 3-D truss and frame members, explicit tangent stiffness matrices are derived. By 'explicit;' it is meant that no element-wise basis functions are assumed and that no element-wise numerical integrations are involved. These explicit tangent stiffness matrices are very simply evaluated at any point in the load deformation history of a space truss, or space frame, undergoing large deformations, as well as in the post-buckled region of behavior of these structures. An arc-length method is implemented to trace the post-buckling behavior of these large space structures. A large number of examples are included to: (1) bring out the economy as well as accuracy of the simplified method developed; (2) indicate the effectiveness of the present method in creating reduced-order models of large space structures; and (3) delineate the process whereby the overall behavior of the structure can be vastly improved by controlling the deformation of individual members through active or passive mechanisms. This monograph is intended to provide a snapshot of the status and opportunities for advan cement in the technologies of dynamics and control oflarge flexible spacecraft structures. It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world,across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.

It is often said that these days there are too many conferences on general areas of computational mechanics. mechanics. and numer ical methods. vJhile this may be true. the his tory of scientific conferences is itself quite short. According to Abraham Pais (in "Subtle is the Lord ...• " Oxford University Press. 1982. p.80). the first international scientific conference ever held was the Karlsruhe Congress of Chemists. 3-5 September 1860 in Karlsruhe. Germany. There were 127 chemists in attendance. and the participants came from Austria. Belgium. France. Germany. Great Britain. Italy. Mexico. Poland. Russia. Spain. Sweden. and Switzerland. At the top of the agenda of the points to be discussed at this conference was the question: "Shall a difference be made between the expressions molecule and atom?" Pais goes on to note: "The conference did not at once succeed in bringing chemists closer together ... It is possible that the older men were offended by the impetuous behavior and imposing manner of the younger scientists" (see references cited in Pais' book). It may be observed that history. in general. repeats itself. However. at ICCM-86 in Tokyo. roughly 500 participants from both the West and the East were in attendance; there were only scholarly exchanges; the young tried to learn from the more experienced. and a spirit of international academic cooperation prevailed.
