Excerpt from Silos, Silage and Silage Crops for Hawaii The weak spot in the system as heretofore managed has beenthat there would be plenty of grass and forage at certain sea sons when rains had occurred, but during the dry seasons and years, there would be great scarceness of feed and often a loss of many head of cattle. To tide over this period of scarcity has been the problem of the ranchmen. There seems to be but two solutions to the problem: namely, prickly pear and silos. Drought resistant grasses have not been able to accomplish desired results. Al though able to hold on, these grasses do not make sufficient forage during periods of drought. It is the purpose here to discuss only the question of silos and the use of silage as a means 'of overcoming this loss during dry seasons. Silage is partly fermented green feed. The feed is placed in airtight pits or structures when in the green state and contain ing 75 - 85 per cent of moisture. The purpose of the silo is to retain the moisture and exclude the air. When placed in the silo the feed begins to ferment and get hot. Lactic acid and other bacteria, and various yeasts are concerned in this heating and fermentation. At the end of about 36 hours the tempera ture is quite high. However, complete fermentation and decay is prevented by the exclusion of the air, and such a result will be found at any point where air chances to enter. It is evident that while silage is a compara tively cheap feed, its greatest value is that it reduces to one third' the crop land-necessary to feed or winter a given number of animals. The Silo thus makes it possible, on the average, to put-one-third of the present crop land in corn, one - third in soybeans or other crop for roughage, and to seed the other' third of the roughest land now cultivated to permanent pas ture, and at the same time to greatly increase the number of animals that can be wintered. As the result of this study I have become thoroughly impressed with the belief that many of the mistakes and difficulties in the building of silos might be avoided if the builders had a more thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles of silo construction and the preservation of silage. There is no recent American book on silo building and none of any date which covers the many types'of silos now in use and gives details of their construction. There are a number of experiment station publications on the subject, but these are necessarily either brief in their treatment or limited to special types. Excerpt from The Silo in California Agriculture While the history of the silo dates back to antiquity, it is only during relatively recent years that separate silo structures have been built. The introduction of the silo on American farms may be said to date from the latter part'of the eighties, and especially during the last dozen years silos have gone up in large numbers on dairy and stock farms. In the thirteen Mississippi Valley states nearly silos were built in 1913, and over were built in Wisconsin alone the same year, making a total of about silos, or one on every four farms in that state. Statistics from other states where dairying or cattle rais ing are leading industries would doubtless show that the silo has assumed similar importance in the system of feeding farm animals there and, as noted, this change has come within comparatively recent years.
